Bathroom Tile Design – Material Types for Bathroom Tile Designs

Good bathroom tile design should create a floor surface that is attractive, water resistant and safe to walk on. Bathroom tile designs using ceramic tile, rubber flooring or vinyl and linoleum floors are examples of bathroom tile design material choices that should be available nearly anywhere. These types of tiles are easy to clean, water resistant and safe to walk on. If you are going to use natural stone or terra-cotta ceramic tiles on your floors to create a more sophisticated effect, make sure you buy the kind with a non-slip finish.

As you consider which bathroom tile designs to select, each type of tile will have unique properties that may or may not provide characteristics that are good for your bathroom. Here are different material types for bathroom tile design along with advantages or disadvantages of each:

1. Laminate and Vinyl Bathroom Tile Design – these types of tile in bathroom tile designs can be found in a variety of colors, patterns and textures. Some tiles even imitate wood, stone and ceramic. It is not very expensive, is water resistant, easy to install and clean and it is durable.

2. Ceramic Bathroom Tile Design – ceramic tile can range from fairly cheap to expensive and it is the classic choice. Tile is made of clay, shale or porcelain and is formed and fired at very high temperatures until it hardens. The higher the temperature and the more times the tile is fired, the harder and less porous the tile.

If you are using a white or cream ceramic tile for your bathroom, using a different color grout like “blue” will give your bathroom a dramatic look. Grout is the material used to fill the spaces between the tiles. Make sure you apply sealers to grout lines in areas of heavy wear like countertops. Sealers will also preserve grout colors.

3. Stone Bathroom Tile Designs (marble, granite, brick, slate, onyx, travertine and limestone) – this tile can be beautiful, very strong, durable in high-traffic areas, it will last a long time, is low maintenance and easy to clean. However, it is expensive, it’s a cold material, can be slippery and absorbs stains easily.

4. Linoleum Bathroom Tile Design – this tile is made of renewable and natural materials like linseed oil, ground cork, limestone, jute and wood flour. This type of bathroom floor is making a comeback with new marbled and graphic designs, and it is more durable and easier to clean than vinyl tile.

5. Mosaic Bathroom Tile – this wonderful tile was an ancient craft that today can be made of tile, stone, porcelain and colored glass, creating stunning floor patterns. These tiles are small (1 or 2 inches square) and often expensive. What you can do is to add a small section of this type of tile for visual interest to your floor or countertop.

6. Concrete Bathroom Tile Designs – durable, low maintenance, perfect for wet areas and stunning. You can find this type of tile …

Types of House Foundations for Home Construction

A slab foundation is simply a poured slab of concrete that a house is built upon. A Slab foundation usually sits upon a footing that has been constructed below the frost line. The concrete slab is typically 4 to 8 inches in thickness with embedded steel rods known as “rebar” to prevent cracking and faulting. The house foundation is built directly on the soil with no basement or crawlspace. All water lines and waistlines are installed prior to the concrete being poured.

SLAB FOUNDATION ADVANTAGES

One of the main reasons slab foundations are popular is the cost factor. Slab foundations are the least expensive and the quickest to install. Slab foundations reduce the cost of the entire building simply because the houses built directly on the slab. That saves the cost of floor joists that would normally support the building. Slab foundation homes are easier to heat because there is no airspace under the house affecting the interior temperatures.

SLAB FOUNDATION DISADVANTAGES

Because there’s no basement or crawlspace all ventilation duct-work must be channeled through the attic and through spaces in the walls. There is no additional space for utilities and no storage, the entire home is basically sitting on a large platform of solid concrete. Although slab foundations are the least expensive house foundations to construct, they’re the most expensive to repair. All the plumbing for the home is basically under the concrete slab making it impossible to repair without tearing up concrete floor which is now part of the interior of your home. Leaks are difficult to detect because they’re under the slab and in many cases go undetected for years. An unusually high water bill is the first indication that you may have an underground leak.

THE SECOND OF THE THREE TYPES OF HOUSE FOUNDATIONS-CRAWLSPACE

Crawlspace foundation consists of a perimeter concrete wall and concrete columns that will support the floor joists of your home. The distance between the soil and the first floor of your home is known as the crawlspace.this foundation is either built the ground level or over shallow excavation depth from 3 to 4 feet. The exterior foundation walls will support the building load and several concrete Piers will be constructed in the crawlspace for extra support. Crawlspace foundations in the past have been built using the original soil as the floor, and recent changes in building codes are now insisting on at least a two inch cement flooring to be used to help control any moisture problems.

CRAWLSPACE ADVANTAGES

A Crawlspace foundation raises the home 3 to 4 feet above the ground level. This has many advantages, all the plumbing and wiring and ventilation ducts can easily be maintained and serviced. In addition to providing access under the home crawlspaces allow airflow under the home. This will assist in cooling in the summer, crawlspaces are usually cool when properly ventilated.

Crawlspace House Foundations in Flood Areas

If you live in an area that is prone to flood, having a crawlspace foundation is …

Interior Door Types

When choosing interior doors for your home or office, it is important to first think about the function that the door will operate. There is a variety of doors on the market for specific purposes: decorative doors, protection doors, as well as privacy and security doors. Decorative doors are usually installed inside homes as a barrier between the rooms or common areas that do not need security – for example, doors connecting the kitchen and a living room. The main purpose of a decorative door is overall attractiveness and being an element of décor of the house. Protection doors are usually the doors that connect the house or the place of business with the outside world and serve as a security measure to prevent trespassing and unwanted business to enter the premises. Security doors always have special locks and most of the times are made with heavy materials like solid wood or stainless steel for an additional sturdiness. Privacy doors are used to keep the noise and unwanted people away and to connect common areas like person’s room, office or utility room.

Types of rooms which the doors connect also determine the way the interior door will look like. Decide what you want the door to do for you and choose accordingly. For example, bathroom doors should be different from cabinet, closet or AC room doors, because they all serve different purpose.

Most homeowners nowadays prefer contemporary home design over traditional and modern interior design, even though contemporary style is often being criticized for being too cold and sterile. Choosing the right door will help to contribute to overall house atmosphere and to make contemporary home feel more inviting and warm, while contributing to modern and traditional design as well. Solid timber doors generally have a more traditional appearance.

Interior doors come in a variety of finishes: some people prefer traditional wood, but often individuals and business owners choose veneer which is much more affordable than solid wood, and also glass of leather. Veneer doors are ideal for connecting between the rooms and living areas; they provide medium noise isolation and low to medium security. Glass doors are great for the rooms that need more light like kitchen, bathroom, sometimes even the outside door. Leather finish is popular in a modern home design; those types of doors are usually used for offices or exterior door in the apartment building. Leather finish is chic and elegant and provides high noise isolation and, depending on the material, high security.

There are residential and commercial use interior doors. If you are choosing the door for your business it has to be extremely functional and tough. Correctly chosen door is an important part of a successful business, because it will protect your workplace against unpredictable weather, wind, fire or vandalism and theft. Commercial use interior door should be pretty much invisible – not to attract much attention until you need to use it.

Residential doors include Bi-fold, Pocket, Sliding and French doors. The choice …

Types of Bathroom Sinks

Bathroom sinks come in many shapes and sizes designed to complement any bathroom size and style. Listed below are the most common bathroom sink styles.

Self Rimming Sinks
Also called countertop sinks, these sinks are come in a variety of sizes, shapes, and hole configurations. They are mounted from above the counter with a visible rim that fits in the hole of the counter top. When ordering this type of sink, be sure to take into consideration whether your faucet requires a single hole, 4 "center set or 8" widespread configuration and be sure to order the sink in the same corresponding configuration.

Undermount Sinks
Also known as undercounter sinks, are installed from underneath a solid surface counter top, such as granite, stone or manmade material and does not have a "rim." To install this style of sink you may need a mounting kit.

Pedestal Sinks
These are freestanding sinks that sit on their own bases. They are usually generously sized for everyday use and are beautifully styled. Pedestal sinks are perfect for small bathrooms and powder room because they save space but they don't offer any underneath storage space. When selecting a pedestal sink, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing items underneath.

Vessel Style Sinks
Also known as above-counter sinks, vessel sinks can be mounted on ornate stands that brilliantly hold their own in your bathroom design. This style offers new exciting shapes, designs and colors, and stands freely on cabinets to make a big fashion statement. Wall-mount faucets work well with this style sink, however some manufacturers offer a tempered glass faucet stand which butts up to the glass vessels and hides the base of deck-mount faucets. Some vessels are manufactured with an overflow but most are without an overflow, so a grid drain must be installed to prevent accidental over filling.

Console Sinks
Console Sinks combine the style of a pedestal while at the same time providing larger counter areas. The sink and countertop are one. Because of the larger counter area, console sinks come complete with either (2) or (4) legs for support. This style offers a lot of choices in size and style of sink; oval, rectangular, square and round, and you can choose a single or double bowl. They are easy to clean and offer extra counter space. Standard sizes are available and custom orders can be placed.

Wall Hung Sinks
Installed on the wall, they save both floor and cabinet space. Like Pedestal lavatories, they are very popular in smaller bathrooms. They can be installed at any height and are usually offered with an optional towel bar.

Facts About the Four Major Feng Shui House Types

Classical feng shui students learn about the four major house types within the first few days of instruction. These house s are described in broad brush strokes. Two of the four are supportive for health and relationships and two are not. Two of the four are supportive for financial luck and the other two are not. But to place too much emphasis on these four categories of house types, is like judging a book by its cover or a painting by its frame.

In the 20th century, these four house types were given catchy descriptions, translated from more non-literal Chinese terms, whereby we have one house type that is now labeled "good for people / good for money" (aka Wang Shan Wang Shui). The exact opposite house type is referred to as "Reversed," as in the reverse of the best house. Then there are the two mixed house types, with one being deemed "good for people / bad for money (Double Sitting) and the other one" good for money / bad for people "(Double Facing.)

In reality, we know that life is more complicated, and yet we all know someone who is wealthy, but unhealthy or wealthy but very unhappy. We also know of people who are strong physically and mentally, with loving family members and close friendships, but maybe chronic financial struggles.

So it is easy to assume that these four major house "personalities" cast their influence on the occupants to create these real discrepancies. In studying Xuan Kong Fei Xing, there are actually 144 different house charts, but these 144 "flying star charts" can all be grouped into the four major categories. These categories are determined based on when a house was built and what direction it is sitting or facing, so it is not like seeing a house with certain physical characteristics which would be so obvious.

One of the most frustrating things I encounter frequently is a prospective client who wants me to assist them in house hunting and they have heard about this "good for people / good for money" house and they only want to live in that house type and no others. This is a very myopic way to go house hunting since what qualifies as good Feng Shui overall is based on a lot of criteria which is not determined based solely on the house's orientation or year built. In fact, there are so many instances when a floor plan lay-out is flawed, that it seriously undercuts or over-rides the nature of the so-called best house of these four major categories.

For example, I had one client whose house was deemed this "Wang Shan Wang Shui" (good for people / good for money house type.) Meanwhile, the actual floor plan demonstrated that the bedrooms, entrance and home office were in the worst parts of the house. To backtrack a little, it should be understood that no house on the planet has all inherently positive areas. On average, there are about four of …
