Four people and a family dog are dead and two others injured after a fire erupted at a home in De Soto, Missouri, this weekend.

The blaze started around 2 a.m. on Sunday and claimed the lives of Joe Detter, 76, and his wife, 74-year-old Frances Detter, according to KMOV.

The couple’s daughter, 37-year-old Sherri Detter, was also killed, along with their 18-year-old granddaughter, Kari Detter.

The two survivors were Kari and Sherri’s boyfriends, the outlet said. The two men escaped the burning home by hopping out of second-story windows, family members told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. One of them remains hospitalized.

Joe was remembered as a “great friend” by the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce.

“We are so saddened and at a loss of words to hear of the loss of Joe Detter, his wife and granddaughter,” they said in a statement to KMOV. “He has been an employee of the City of Hillsboro for many years as the building inspector.”

“He was a great friend to many and will be missed terribly,” they added. “Our condolences and hearts go out to the Detter family.”

Joe and Frances’ son, James Detter, told the Post-Dispatch that his father was known around the area for being friendly and willing to assist anyone in need.

“He helped everybody. There isn’t a person in this town he hasn’t done something for,” James — who is one of the couple’s seven children — told the outlet.

“He is going to be missed by everyone,” he continued. “He is going to missed everywhere.”

Kari’s boyfriend told James he was asleep on the second floor of the house when the fire broke out, and woke up to find the stairs leading to the first floor had been blocked off by the flames. He was forced to jump from the window to make his escape.

Unfortunately, Kari was hesitant to leap to the ground.

“She wouldn’t jump,” James said Kari’s boyfriend told him. “He looked up and she was gone.”

The two men called 911 for help once they made it outside, KMOV reported. The family’s dog also died in the blaze.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office and by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, according to Missourinet. A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.

Parents restrain sex offender accused of peeping at teen in bathroom

A group of parents held a registered sex offender accused of peeping under a bathroom stall at a South Carolina restaurant until cops arrived to arrest him, police said.

Douglas Lee Lane, 53, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was prevented from leaving a Cracker Barrel in Duncan, South Carolina, by parents at the restaurant after a teenage girl said she saw him peering at her from a neighboring stall in the women’s bathroom on Sunday, The State reports.

The 15-year-old girl said she noticed something moving near her feet inside the bathroom when she spotted a man’s head coming from the stall beside her, Duncan Police Chief Carl Long told WSPA.

The girl told her father what happened after leaving the bathroom, prompting him to ask a female employee to get Lane out of the restroom. The girl’s father then confronted him inside the restaurant, Long said.

A witness then saw Lane try to leave the restaurant by “sprinting out the front door” with a bloodied nose, but he was stopped in the parking lot by other parents who restrained him until cops arrived, Long said. It is unclear what happened to his nose.

The group of parents were in town for a softball tournament, Long told WYFF.

A viewer sent the station a photo of a bloodied Lane sitting on grass outside the Cracker Barrel.

“Get him, he’s getting away,” a witness told the station he overheard someone say inside the restaurant before Lane ran outside.

A court official said during Lane’s bond hearing Monday that he told authorities he didn’t realize he was in a women’s bathroom until he sat down, WYFF reports.

A judge ordered him held on $2,000 surety bond and to wear a GPS monitor ahead of his next court date on Nov. 12, WSPA reports.

British Teen Fined Over $12,000 For Hosting Large House Party, Apologizes To Neighbors

KEY POINTS

  • The teenager hosted a party with more than 50 guests in violation of restrictions on social gatherings in the U.K.
  • The cops allegedly gave the teen an initial warning to shut down the party but he “deliberately flouted” the rules
  • The number of coronavirus cases in the United Kingdom as of Monday was 368,504

A British teenager who was fined £10,000 ($12,823 USD) for hosting a large house party amid the coronavirus pandemic has apologized to his neighbors.

The 19-year-old host was given the penalty notice after police found more than 50 attendees at the Sept. 11 party at his home in Lenton, Nottinghamshire. The teen will have to appear before a court if he fails to pay the penalty or decides to contest it, Nottinghamshire Live reported.

Nottinghamshire police said officers from the Nottingham City Council were alerted of the party by the residents in the neighborhood. The police who responded to the house were met with “hostility from the organizer”. They had reportedly given him an initial warning to shut down the party but the department said he had “deliberately flouted” the rules. The cops then ordered all the guests to leave the party.

The unidentified teenager sent a letter to his neighbors over the weekend, calling the party a “foolish gathering” and apologizing for the “major lapse of judgment,” the BBC reported.

The host reportedly wrote in the letter the party was held to celebrate two housemates recently turning 21 and was meant for just 25 people, complying with the country’s COVID-19 restrictions.

“However, it quickly became out of hand,” he wrote. “It was never our intention to disrupt your evening. It was a major lapse in judgement (sic) on our end. We are eager to make amends.”

The teenager was fined days before a new rule came into effect amid a rise in coronavirus cases.

Steve Cooper, assistant chief constable with Nottinghamshire Police, said under the previous rules anyone hosting house parties with more than 30 people would face a hefty fine and that the officers were ready to exert “full powers” against those who “deliberately put other people’s lives in danger.”

“We need to all remember we are very much still in the middle of a global pandemic and we all need to take responsibility for our actions,” the Nottinghamshire Live quoted Cooper as saying.

Beginning Monday, social gatherings throughout the United Kingdom are limited to six people. The new rule enables authorities to issue a hefty fine to violators. Officers hoped the Friday incident would serve as an early warning to those thinking of hosting large parties.

The “rule of six” restriction follows Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies member and former chief scientific adviser Sir Mark Walport’s warning that the U.K. is “on the edge of losing control of coronavirus,” BBC reported. Total cases of infection in the country, as of Monday, is 368,504, with the death tally reaching 41,628, according to the data from Worldometer.
