Man In Bathroom Spying Case Faces Charges In Middle Twp.: Police

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man accused of secretly recording girls at a middle school in Gloucester Township now faces similar charges related to the Cape May Technical School, authorities announced on Thursday.

Gregory Mahley, 51 of West Deptford, is accused of recording multiple people who used a bathroom at the school over the course of just over a year, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland announced.

Sutherland believes the incidents occurred on Oct. 15, 2013; March 20, 2014; and April 22, 2014. The alleged victims who are now adults, have been identified and were contacted regarding this investigation, according to Sutherland.

Mahley has been charged with 10 counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child (manufacturing of child pornography) and 10 counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child (possession of child pornography).

Detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Middle Township Police Department opened a joint investigation with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office after it was learned that Mahley had set up cameras to record students using the girls bathroom at Glen Landing Middle School in Gloucester Township. Mahley will remain lodged at the Camden County Correctional Center pending court proceedings.

Parents tackle man accused of spying on girl in bathroom stall

Witnesses said Douglas Lane, a sex offender in both North Carolina and South Carolina, was held down by parents until police arrived.

DUNCAN, S.C. — A man registered as a sex offender in both North Carolina and South Carolina was held down by parents after allegedly peering under a stall in a women’s bathroom, NBC affiliate WYFF reported.

Douglas Lane, 53, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is accused of looking under the stall at the Cracker Barrel restaurant in Duncan, South Carolina, according to the report. Lane has been charged with voyeurism, simple possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Lane was held down and detained by parents visiting town for a girls’ softball tournament, Duncan Police Department Chief Carl Long told WYFF. 

A mug shot released by the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office showed Lane with facial injuries after the altercation.

In both North Carolina and South Carolina, Lane is a registered sex offender with an address listed in Charlotte.

In North Carolina, Lane’s record includes offenses for:

  • 2004: Secretly peeping into an occupied room. The victims were an 8 and 9 year old.
  • 2008: Secretly peeping into an occupied room. The victim was over the age of 18.

In South Carolina, Lane’s record includes offenses for:

  • 1997: An offense for peeping, voyeurism, or aggravated voyeurism. A victim’s age was not provided.
  • 1999: Failure to register as a sex offender

Lane appeared in court Monday, WYFF reported.

Several fathers subdued a registered sex offender outside a Cracker Barrel restaurant in North Carolina on Sunday after the man allegedly peeked under a teenage girl’s bathroom stall.

The incident happened at a Cracker Barrel in Charlotte, N.C., on Sunday morning, according to Duncan police Chief Carl Long.

A 15-year-old girl allegedly saw the suspect peek his head under her bathroom stall and reported it to her parents, police said. Staff found the man in the bathroom and kicked him out, they said.

The girl and her parents were at the restaurant with several other families ahead of a girls’ softball tournament, according to reports.

The victim’s father and a few other dads chased the man out of the restaurant and prevented him from leaving until police arrived.

“Get him, he’s getting away!” they shouted, according to a witness who spoke to local station WYFF 4.

“The guy came running, sprinting out the front door with a very bloody nose,” another witness told local station WSPA.

Video obtained by WSPA shows the suspect bloodied and sitting on the ground while surrounded by parents.

A profanity-filled video posted on TikTok shows one man scolding the suspect, who can be seen sitting on the grass surrounded by angry adults. There is blood on his face and shirt.

“I didn’t do nothing!” the suspect can be heard saying.

“Imma tell you, if that was my daughter, you wouldn’t walk away,” the man tells him.

Douglas Lane, 53, was arrested on voyeurism and drug charges, according to Spartanburg jail records.

Lane is a registered sex offender with four past voyeurism convictions dating as far back as 1996, records show.

A judge set a cash surety bond at $2,000 and ordered Lane to wear a GPS monitor. Lane was also ordered to move to South Carolina and avoid all contact with the victim and her family.

Lane’s lawyer claimed during the hearing that the suspect didn’t know he was in the women’s bathroom.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 12.

DUNCAN, S.C. — A group of parents tackled and restrained a registered sex offender accused of spying on a 15-year-old girl in the women’s bathroom of a South Carolina Cracker Barrel restaurant over the weekend, authorities said.

Douglas Lane, 53, has been charged with voyeurism, as well as possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, according to Duncan Police Chief Carl Long.

Lane has several past convictions for similar behavior in both North and South Carolina dating back more than 20 years, court records show.

News outlets report that the incident occurred Sunday when the girl was using the bathroom and noticed a man looking out from under the stall beside her.

Lane tried to flee the scene after being confronted by the girl’s father but was stopped by a group of parents who were in town for a girls’ softball tournament, Long said. They tackled Lane in the parking lot and held him until police arrived.

A photo taken of Lane later in jail shows him with a bandage wrapped around his head and a bloodied nose.

During a bond hearing Monday, an attorney representing him claimed that Lane didn’t know he was in the women’s bathroom.

A judge set a cash surety bond at $2,000 and ordered Lane to wear a GPS monitor. He is expected back in court in November.

Mahley was an eight-year employee of Multi-Temp Mechanical, Inc., located in Westville. The company was contracted by the Gloucester Township Board of Education to perform Heating Ventilation-Air Conditioning (HVAC) services at the school, according to police. The company was also contracted to do work in the West Deptford Public School District, police said last week. On Friday, Cape May County Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland and Middle Township Police Chief Christopher Leusner announced that he also did work in the Cape May County Technical High School, the Middle Township School District, and the administrative office of the Cape May County MUA.

Detectives from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and the Middle Township Police Department have opened a joint investigation with the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if Mahley has committed any crimes while providing HVAC services in the county, officials said.

No cameras have been found in either of the schools, according to the prosecutor’s office. The investigation continues.

In Gloucester Township, officials said Mahley installed mirrors onto the back of bathroom stall doors that allowed him to secretly record girls using the restroom through an air conditioning vent.

Once the mirrors were discovered, school officials found Mahley inside the utility closet where he recorded the videos, police said. During the investigation, police seized multiple devices from Mahley’s West Deptford home and his work vehicle.

Mahley was charged with seven counts of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child (manufacturing of child pornography), eight counts of third-degree invasion of privacy, and seven counts of third-degree endangering the welfare of a child (possession of child pornography).

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — An HVAC contractor who is accused of setting up mirrors to spy on students in a girls’ bathroom in Gloucester Township also did work in West Deptford schools, police said Friday afternoon. Now, they are investigating to see if he may have done something similar in local schools.

On Thursday, Gloucester Township police announced that 51-year-old Gregory Mahley, of West Deptford, had been arrested after police say he installed a secret mirror in a girls’ bathroom at Glen Landing Middle School.

After the announcement, West Deptford police learned that Multi-Temp Mechanical, Inc. conducted HVAC services in schools in West Deptford. It was also confirmed that Mahley worked inside West Deptford schools, police said.

On Friday afternoon, West Deptford police announced that they were conducting a joint investigation with Gloucester Township police, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office and the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

Gloucester Township police have said that Multi-Temp Mechanical, Inc. has been cooperating with their investigation.

“Our police department is dedicated to ensuring a safe learning environment within the district,” police said in a statement. “We have asked the West Deptford School Superintendent not to comment on this matter while the investigation continues. We will release further details when it is appropriate.”
