2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS spy shots: Electric sedan’s interior spotted

Mercedes-Benz is committed to launching at least 10 electric cars by the end of 2022.

The first has been revealed as the EQC small SUV, and others in the pipeline that we know of include the EQA and EQB compact SUVs, electric commercials like the eVito and eSprinter vans, and an EQE sedan and EQE SUV.

We now have fresh spy shots of an EQS, a large electric sedan to sit alongside the latest S-Class. Mercedes will launch it in 2021, meaning we’ll likely see it arrive as a 2022 model.

The latest prototypes have lost a lot of the camouflage gear of earlier testers, revealing that the EQS is a liftback sedan akin to the Tesla Model S, high-end versions of which will be its main target. Other targets will include the new Lucid Air, an electric Jaguar XJ soming soon, and to a lesser extent the Porsche Taycan and related Audi E-Tron GT.

We also have some shots of the interior which features a large, portrait-style infotainment screen similar to the one in the new S-Class revealed earlier in September. Expect advanced voice activation, a head-up display with augmented reality graphics, and a digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics.

The car’s platform is a dedicated battery-electric design known as the MEA2 (Mercedes Electric Architecture), and the EQS is just the first application. MEA1 underpins the EQC and is based on a modified version of Mercedes’ MHA platform for SUVs with internal-combustion engines.

We can see that the EQS is a lot lower and sleeker than your typical Mercedes, including the CLS and AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. We can also see in some of the shots that the doors will be frameless and feature extendable handles. Mercedes previewed the design with the Vision EQS concept unveiled during September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.

The MEA2 platform has enabled the designers to add a long wheelbase and short overhangs front and rear, and although the EQS looks to be similar in size to the mid-size CLS, the interior space should be on par or better than the full-size S-Class.

Given the rapid advancement in battery technology, Mercedes is keeping quiet on specs for its future electric cars. However, we know the EQS will come in several grades including one with a range of 435 miles when measured on the WLTP test cycle used overseas. This could still result in a range of over 400 miles when measured on the stricter EPA test cycle.

There’s also talk of a Mercedes-AMG version of the EQS packing performance similar to the S63 sledgehammer, as well as an ultra-luxury Maybach version.

Burglar rumbled by girl, 6, who spotted alarming sign in garden

A girl, aged just six, urgently warned her mum of a burglar who was about to enter their property.

The brave daughter spoke out after Kelly Price climbed over the fence of her and her mum’s home.

Leicester Crown Court has heard how the little girl raised the alarm saying: “Mummy, there’s a lady in the back garden'”

The mum then confronted price in the doorway of her kitchen and escorted her off the premises, LeicestershireLive reports.

Price claimed she was being chased by a man, but sneakily helped herself to a mobile phone, which had been left charging on the kitchen counter of the home in Alma Street, Newfound Pool, Leicester, at 6.30pm on Wednesday July 29.

The victim’s husband rang his wife on the way home from work and ended up talking to Price, who answered the call.

She claimed she had just bought the handset and offered to re-sell it for £35.

Katrina Wilson, prosecuting, told Leicester Crown Court: “He took her up on the offer.”

They arranged to meet at the Lidl car park on Fosse Road North, in the city.

When the husband arrived, he took a photograph of the defendant.

Miss Wilson said: “There was an argument about ownership of the phone and he made a grab for it.”

She threw it under a parked van and her bag fell to the floor causing a bottle of alcohol inside to break – which the defendant then picked up and pointed it at him.”

She threatened: “If you come near me I’ll hurt you.’

“I know your wife and I know your home.”

The prosecutor said the defendant ran off leaving the man “shaken up”, but he recovered the phone.

Police then found Price nearby and arrested her.

When interviewed, the defendant, of Astill Drive, Mowmacre Hill, Leicester, insisted she had just bought the phone.

She told the officers “I’m not a dishonest person.”

Price has 79 offences on her criminal record, which were mostly thefts and burglaries, Miss Wilson said.

Sentencing, Judge Ebrahim Mooncey said: “You went to someone’s garden where there were children playing and one of them alerted her mother.

“You helped yourself to a phone from within the house, which makes it a burglary when occupants were present.

“No doubt the mother and children will remember it for a long time and feel they have to be careful in their own back garden

“Your behaviour towards the father, who wanted the phone back, is very concerning.”

James Varley, mitigating, said: “This isn’t a typical burglary and was clearly committed in desperation by putting her hand through a doorway to take something from the counter.

“She says she was being threatened by a man about a £20 debt.

“Happily, her relationship with him has broken

1 of 3 orphaned black bear cubs found in Banff bathroom spotted on trail camera

One of the three orphaned black bears found in a washroom in Banff National Park three years ago was spotted on a wildlife camera Aug. 2.

“We captured a picture of this black bear, 1803, one of our rehab cubs from 2017,” said Blair Fyten, a human wildlife co-existence specialist with Parks Canada. “That was our first sighting of this particular bear.”

The bear’s identification number comes from the year on her ear tag (2018), and the three represents that she was the third black bear Parks Canada worked with that year.

‘We may never know’ how bear cubs became stranded in Banff bathroom: Parks Canada

The female black bear, who’s now three-and-a-half years old, was photographed just three kilometres from where the cubs were released back into the wild in July 2018.

“Our staff was very happy to see that one of these bears has survived,” Fyten told Global News.

“She looked in pretty good shape — a bit on the lanky side, but that’s what you’d expect for a teenager. It’s kind of typical for bears that age… scraggly hair,” he said.

After two years in the Banff National Park backcountry on her own, “she’s doing quite well.”

The three bear cubs were found in a roadside bathroom on the Trans-Canada Highway west of Banff on April 1, 2017.

After searching for three days and checking wildlife cameras, workers could not find the mother bear.

Due to provincial rules regarding rescue and rehab of bears in Alberta, Parks Canada sent the three female cubs to Ontario for rehabilitation. More than a year later, on July 17, 2018, the trio was released back into Banff’s backcountry.

Parks Canada confirmed one cub didn’t make it. Staff tracked her GPS collar to a location and found her carcass and evidence that she likely died from a grizzly bear attack.

Fyten said it was encouraging to see footage proving at least one of the three cubs was alive and well. The status of the third one is unknown. The GPS collars on the surviving two bears slipped off that first spring in the wild, but there was no evidence they died or were attacked, Fyten said.

“There’s still one we don’t know about,” he said. “It could be out there. It might not be.”
