A Members-Only Club Wants to Be the Soho House for Snow Bunnies

(Bloomberg Businessweek) — Walk into the lobby of Breck Haus, a seven-month-old hotel and membership club in Breckenridge, Colo., and it can feel at first like a nature lover’s Soho House.

But instead of fashion-conscious creative types, fresh-eyed, fit thirtysomethings and fortysomethings dressed head-to-toe in Gore-Tex sip craft beers by the fireplace, with Aussie shepherds curled at their feet. The velvet midcentury modern couches and benches made from fur-covered lift seats are filled with just as many locals as out-of-towners.

When I went in February, its first month of operation, the crowd included plenty of skiers heading out to score first tracks. By early September, it had shifted to remote workers hunkered down at Unravel, a buzzy coffee shop anchored by a Bellwether zero-emissions roaster. The weekly events calendar, naturally Covid-19-safe, touted complimentary guided hikes up Grays Peak and free workshops on compass reading, not airy artist talks and gut-thumping DJ sets.

If Soho House was intended as a gathering place for urban busybodies, then Gravity Haus Inc., Breck Haus’s parent brand, aims to be a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. A co-working space called StarterHaus allows the work-hard, play-hard crowd to bounce seamlessly between conference calls and trail runs, and Dryland Fitness & Spa offers a state‑of-the-art gym and Japanese-inspired hot tubs. The on-site hotel has 60 simple rooms, plus an expansive locker room for gear storage and a Super Tramp rig for practicing snowboard moves.

The concept is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Jim Deters, and it brings several of his existing ventures—the co-working facility, the gym, a mountain-guiding company—under a single roof. He sees the brand as being eco-conscious, adventure-driven, and democratic, rather than exclusive.

An entry-level membership to Gravity Haus costs just $40 a month, with a 12-month minimum, and offers application-free access to the club and the ability to book classes and rent gear. Big-city equivalents such as the Battery in San Francisco or the Fitler Club in Philadelphia require initiation fees of about $5,000 and can cost $600 a month for those whose social clout makes the cut.

Until recently, the brand’s most popular membership, the Weekender,

How to protect your plants from the snow and cold in Colorado

With an early September cold front on the way, here are some tips on how to prepare your late-summer garden for the snow and cold.

DENVER — Just as our fight with the Japanese beetles is coming to an end this season, Mother Nature is giving us a temporary, but damaging cold snap. Don’t let all of your hard work and dedication to your garden be for nothing.

Take the time to do things to protect your tender plants so when the weather does warm back up at the end of the week you’ll still have flowers to enjoy this fall.

Trees and shrubs

Trees, shrubs and perennials will be fine. The soil is still warm so, while they might take a little hit with their blooms, the plants themselves will survive.

Vegetables

Harvest and cover your vegetables.

If your vegetable plants are too big to cover, harvest the vegetables and let them ripen inside.

Annuals and flowers

Cover tender annuals, patio pots, herbs and veggies. Frost cloths, bed sheets, or even a larger pot turned upside down on top of the plant will all work as covers.

Do what you can to give plants protection. If you need to, move patio pots into the garage just in case.

Sprinklers

Make sure to disconnect all of your hoses and turn your sprinkler system clock to the off position.

You’re not going to need to water for a while, but do not winterize your sprinkler system yet. Warmer weather is going to return so you’re not done watering for the season.

If you’re concerned about protecting your backflow preventer, go ahead and cover that with a blanket as well. Better to be safe than sorry!

Don’t give up hope, gardeners! In Colorado we have to be as hardy as the plants to survive our crazy weather. So once the storm settles in, enjoy time inside in your fuzzy pj’s with a warm cup of tea. This too shall pass.

How Snow Damages Furniture, Patio Decor

When you put your hard earned money into purchasing pieces of furniture patio decor, you want to make sure that you are going to protect that investment. Little do people know how much damage just leaving those furniture pieces out in the cold a time or two can do.

In this article we are going to show you why you want to bring your furniture in, or at least cover it up in the winter, to avoid the damage that snow can do to it.

Plastic Furniture – Many people take the economic route to purchasing furniture patio decor. This is not a bad idea, especially if you are going to leave it out in the winter. In the case of plastic furniture, winter weather can weaken it and make it brittle. Also, if there are any cracks in the furniture already, the snow that is falling can seep into those cracks, melt, refreeze and expand. This will cause the cracks to become even bigger and do more damage to your furniture pieces.

Metal Furniture – If you have metal furniture, leaving it out in the snow can really shorten its life span. Water and metal have never been the best of buddies. Water often breaks down metal and causes it to rust. Well, snow is water, so the same thing will hold true here. In some cases snow can be worse as it can cause damage both outside and inside metal furniture. On the outside, it can work away at the surface. But then it will melt and seep into any openings. Later it will freeze again and expand, possibly damaging the metal by making it change its shape.

Wood Furniture – Wood furniture can be extremely damaged by snow. First, the winter weather that comes with snow is generally dry, leading to cracking in the wood. Then the show falls. It gets into those cracks and melts. Now you have water, inside the wood. As soon as it freezes again it is going to push and strain against the wood crack. In most cases it will make the cracks and splits in your wood bigger and more pronounced. Not only can these be ugly cracks, but they can also pinch and snag skin and weaken the composition of the furniture altogether.

Furniture Cushions- The final thing you need to think about when it comes to furniture patio decor is those nice comfortable cushions that you like on your patio furniture. Are you leaving them out in the snow? This is just as bad as leaving them in the rain. You see, the snow is going to fall on them and then melt. It will seep inside and stay there. Over time this can lead to mold and mildew from those wet cushions. At the least it can lead to a mess for you to clean up. At the most it could lead to complete destruction of your cushions and mean you have to replace them.

With all of …
