Yes, “overwhelming” is one word I could use to describe this remodeling experience, but I would also have to throw in the words “satisfying”, and “worth all the effort” and even “What took me so long?” I have to say that I am so happy I decided to do this project and I did learn lots of bathroom renovation lessons along the way.

As I look back over all of the places I’ve lived, I realize that I have never undertaken a big remodeling project. I have only had cosmetic work done, so this whole process was new to me. Having Casey guide me through the process was a godsend, but I realized that with some good planning and a realistic idea of what to expect of the process, anyone can do it. I hope these steps can help you get started on your own project.

This Pink Kitchen Is Major Renovation Inspiration

Location: Though the address is technically on the bustling Brixton Road, the house is set back as a refuge from the action. “When you come off the street, which is really busy and hectic and polluted, and there’s this very quiet, high-walled, green garden out the back, it really does feel like a little oasis,” Rosie says.

The before: Prior to the renovation, the kitchen and living room were combined in a cramped, gloomy box. With just a single barred window, the area was so dark that Rosie needed to keep all the lights on during the day. The finishes were also rather cheap.

The inspiration: “The building itself is Victorian, but because it’s a basement flat, there are no original features—no cornicing, no historical fireplaces. If I had had those things, I probably would’ve gone for a more classical look, but I thought it would be quite nice to go for something that had echoes of modernism. I wanted it to have a slight midcentury feel, but also be quite contemporary.”

Square footage: 4 square meters (approximately 43 square feet)

Budget: £70,000 (approximately $89,700)

They have a very beautiful lace grain.”

Countertops: White Corian. “I was obsessed with having really bright things because my last kitchen was so dark,” says Rosie. “I wanted it to feel really clean and fresh.”

Flooring: Granorte Cork Tiles. “The cork floor is very ’70s, but I love it,” Rosie says.

“The really lovely thing about a cork floor is if you drop something, it doesn’t break,” Rosie notes. “I was originally going to go for a poured concrete, but I’m so glad I didn’t. The cork is really soft underfoot and always feels quite warm.”

 “The great pleasure of having a glass roof is that the plants are so happy and grow really well,” Rosie says.

Natural Oak and Soft Daylight Define This Kitchen Renovation

In the United Kingdom, the term “mullet architecture” describes homes that appear traditional from the front and feature a modern extension in the back. This common occurrence is a result of strict conservation laws that aim to maintain the historical street view while allowing residents to renovate behind the facade. Local architects like George Bradley, director of London-based studio Bradley Van Der Straeten and host of Another Architecture Podcast, are all too familiar with these complicated rules. In order to update a typical Victorian terrace house, he and his team had to navigate an endless list of codes.

The objective was to produce a spacious, light-filled kitchen without raising the low ceiling or exceeding height constraints on the boundary with the neighbor. To accomplish this, George imagined a sloped glass roof to top the side extension. On the interior, a curved edge ramps up to the skylight to maximize volume and northern sun exposure, creating an airy room infused with soothing, soft daylight.

The clients also requested trendless finishes, so a classic, monochromatic wood look was the obvious choice. Custom cabinet fronts with recessed, half-moon-shaped handles were crafted from natural oak. The same species was sourced for the built-in banquette, wall paneling, and engineered floors. With a clear connection to the garden beyond, a serene, organic feel was achieved.

Location: “London is a city made up of a conglomeration of little villages, and Crouch End is one of the nicest ones,” George explains. “It’s further out of the city, but it’s on a hill, so it’s got good air and good views. Generally, the properties are generous there. It’s a nice, family-oriented neighborhood.”

The before: With low ceilings and pale yellow, Shaker-style cabinets, the original kitchen was not intended for living. The tight, rectangular room was once a service quarter, so its layout was inefficient for modern use.

The inspiration: “The clients were very keen that it be quite timeless, quite minimal, but quite classic, as well,” George recalls. “They loved the idea of the natural earthiness of the timber, but they didn’t want something that felt like a fad or sort of funky, so a lot of the design is quite ageless.”

Square footage: 35 square meters (approximately 377 square feet)

Budget: “For a typical extension like this, you would be looking at approximately £3,000 per square meter excluding taxes,” George estimates. That’s about $359 per square foot.

Space Station bathroom renovation launching on next cargo supply run

It’s a home makeover but 200 miles above Earth: The next resupply delivery mission to the International Space Station will include a new re-designed commode for the astronauts.

A cargo re-supply launch is scheduled to liftoff on a Northrop Grumman Antares rocket Sept. 29 from NASA’s Wallops Island Flight Facility carrying supplies for the astronauts, research, hardware and a marketing experiment for the makeup company Estee Lauder.

Loaded up among nearly 8,000 pounds of supplies, the Northrop Grumman’s Cygnus cargo spacecraft will also deliver a new “Universal Waste Management System,” also known as a space toilet, to the floating laboratory in space and home to astronauts 365 days a year.

The system actually has two important purposes on the ISS. Outside the bathroom needs, it also cleans water to be used again by the astronaut

“We recycle about 90% of all water-based liquids on the space station, including urine and sweat,” NASA astronaut Jessica Meir said in a news release. “What we try to do aboard the space station is mimic elements of Earth’s natural water cycle to reclaim water from the air. And when it comes to our urine on ISS, today’s coffee is tomorrow’s coffee!”

The engineers behind the low-gravity loo spoke about the technology during a press call Thursday with reporters.

The new toilet design will be used on the ISS and for NASA’s second Artemis mission to the moon with astronauts. According to government contracts, NASA awarded two contracts totaling more than $18 million to design and build the new system.

The new toilet is 65% smaller and 40% lighter than the current potty on the ISS. It’s about the same size as what you might see in a camper, according to Melissa McKinley, NASA Advanced Exploration Systems Logistics Reduction project manager.

The new toilet has also been optimized for female astronauts.

“NASA spent a lot of time working with the crew members and doing evaluations to improve the use of the commode seat and the urine funnel to make it more accommodating to the use by female crew members,” McKinley said.

The new toilet will have a fan that helps pull urine and feces away from the body because, without gravity, humans need a little help.

“We have gravity that helps pull the feces and urine away from our body and into the toilet,” Collins Aerospace engineer Jim Fuller said. “In space where we have microgravity, we don’t have that luxury. So this dual-fan separator actually creates the motive force by creating a strong airflow that helps pull the urine and feces away from the body.

It’s been a while since the space station got a full bathroom upgrade.

“We’re really excited about this new toilet,” Fuller said. “I don’t think we’ve developed a new toilet in a couple of decades.”

RV renovation: Big changes, small decor touches make a motorhome feel homey | Food + Living

After being grounded for months, we’ve become antsy, craving adventure and escape. But with social distancing recommendations still clipping our wings, plane, bus and train travel seem worrisome.

Home still feels safer than anywhere else. What to do? Why, take that home on the open road. That’s precisely what a motorhome or camper lets us do. It’s no wonder that the RV Industry Association reports a sharp uptick in RV sales and rentals.

“Our inventory is down to a dozen vehicles,” says Autumn Quinn, marketing manager of Dylane RV Center, Denver. “Normally we would have about 80 vehicles on the lot. Spontaneity and freedom are key attractions to travel by RV, and they are precisely what families are looking for after all those COVID constraints.”

Lee Vought of Stoltzfus RV of Adamstown agrees. “We have four RVs in the lot. Normally, we’d have 100.”

Dealers say that RV manufacturers are working hard to improve motor homes’ interiors, but at price tags of $50,000 to $100,000 for new motor homes, or even more depending on sizes and features, older models are obviously popular. However, their interiors are an issue for design-minded buyers.

Some RVs practically beg for design intervention. But it seems a daunting task. RVs are smaller spaces, so every decision counts, and plywood walls and boring cabinets make you want to start from scratch and tear everything apart.

Chic comes to old RV

Designer Anastasia Laudermilch of Annville understands this problem. She faced it herself when she and her husband bought a 1999 Winnebago.

“We bought it for weekend trips,” she says. “We like the escape once in a while. But I couldn’t live with its interior, and I ended up changing every inch. It was a DIY job, lots of work, but also very satisfying. Rolling down the road in a comfortable, attractive vehicle makes weekend adventures so much better.”

What in the past may, to some, may have given RVs a reputation for tackiness has been all the woody surfaces. So Laudermilch started right there, painting the walls light gray and the upper cabinets black.
