Interior designer Jeff Andrews unveils his own home project in L.A.

Interior designer-to-the-stars Jeff Andrews and his partner, Emmy-winning casting director Ken Miller, have put their home in the Miracle Mile neighborhood of Los Angeles on the market for $2.35 million.

As one might expect, the 1930s Spanish Colonial Revival has received a complete makeover at the hands of Andrews. Subdued hues, fabric wallpaper and eye-catching fixtures are among curated details of note. Dark hardwood floors unify the 2,334-square-foot floor plan.

Beyond the arched entry are formal living and dining rooms, an updated country-vibe kitchen, a breakfast room, two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. A paneled den sits at the end of a long hallway and has a brick fireplace and a wet bar.

French doors lead outside, where succulents and other drought-tolerant landscaping surround a tiled patio. Also on the property is a two-car garage.

Andrews has worked on the homes of such stars as Kaley Cuoco, Kourtney Kardashian and Ryan Seacrest. Last year, he published his first book, “The New Glamour: Interiors with Star Quality,” which offers a glimpse inside his more high-profile projects. He has twice been on Elle Decor’s A-list of top interior designers in the world.

Morven Museum & Garden undertakes major preservation project

PRINCETON – The Morven Museum & Garden will undertake a major preservation project with support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and a National Park Service “Save America’s Treasures” grant.

“In these extraordinary times, we are able to fulfill our most primary public charge, to preserve the National Historic Landmark known as Morven in perpetuity, thanks to a $210,000 grant from the Save America’s Treasures program of the National Park Service coupled with a gift from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,” Morven Museum & Garden’s Executive Director Jill Barry said in a prepared statement.

Competing against preservation projects from across the country, Save America’s Treasures, administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior, awarded Morven its full request to facilitate much-needed repairs on the landmark structure including exterior woodwork repair, interior floor repairs, interior storm windows, and a new energy efficient lighting system, according to the statement.

 

“At a time where operating funds are so limited, we are fortunate to have funders that understand the importance of caring for the infrastructure of the 260-year-old physical building in a timely manner or risk suffering irreparable damage,” Barry said in the statement. “As Robert Wood Johnson’s home from 1928-44, the foundation generously supported the project.”

Notably, additional matching funds were provided by the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund, along with the sponsorship of the Princeton chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for the first phase of the project, the repair of 52 windows and corresponding 104 shutters, according to the statement.

Most historic sites celebrate one notable resident, Morven is unique in that it was home to many remarkable people. Built in the 1750s and home to one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Morven is New Jersey’s first governor’s mansion and home to five New Jersey governors, their families and staffs, witnessing nearly 300 years of history, according to the statement.

Morven is located at 55 Stockton St., Princeton, and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The gardens are open daily until dusk.

Fair Oaks kids grow pandemic side project in backyard garden

During World War II, Victory Gardens were all the rage. In order to help stave off a food shortage, people planted vegetable gardens in their yards. Not only did they help make sure the soldiers off fighting had enough to eat but they gave the people a purpose and helped them feel like they were contributing something of value during the war.

The springtime start of the coronavirus pandemic this year coincided with a rebirth of the home garden for many. For the Gordon family of Fair Oaks, it was time to tear up the backyard to try something new — and old.

Tavon Gordon, 17, is used to spending his summers in basketball camps with his friends and Del Campo High School basketball teammates Jackson Taylor, Brayden White and Damjan Agovic. As it became clear in March the summer was going to look very different for the Gordons’ eldest son and his friends, the idea came quickly into place.

The Gordons knew Tavon and his friends would need a way to get together outside and have a safe activity during quarantine. They consulted Kenneth Karl White — one of their neighbors and Brayden’s father — who is a very experienced gardener. Game plans were drawn and the boys traded basketball drills for urban farming.

“When COVID first hit in the middle of March, we were all trying to figure out what is ‘shelter in place and why is there no toilet paper?’” said Chantell Gordon, Tavon’s mom. “And wondering if we would run out of food — What’s going to happen? Our neighbor grew up on a farm and has a garden at his house. They even have chickens and a greenhouse, and he’s rented land somewhere else in Sacramento so he can have a bigger plot. He asked us what we thought about doing this.”

The families decided to use the Gordon’s backyard to start another garden, and have the boys’ core group of friends work on it.

“It would give them a chance to do something — to be outside, and it’s a skill they can take with them,” said Chantell.

White drew up plans based on what was best to plant at the time, and how long those plants would need before they could be harvested. The Gordons tilled up their backyard. Both Chantell and her husband Greg were mostly working from home and figured the money they were saving on gas to commute would offset the costs of getting started with the garden. Whether it did or not, it would be worth it to keep the boys busy with something other than just video games. In April, the families all put on their masks and headed to the nursery to pick up their first plants.

Under the guidance of their neighbor, they were starting to grow tomatoes, peppers, corn, squash and strawberries.

“It’s been so cool to see it happening,” said Chantell.
