Not all online banks offer wire transfers, can complicate home buying

  • On the morning I was supposed to close on my first home, I found out that the online bank where I’d saved my down payment didn’t offer outgoing wire transfers.
  • Because I didn’t have access to wires to transfer money instantly, I couldn’t get my cash to the title company that day, and it meant pushing back my closing.
  • It turns out that my bank isn’t an outlier — many popular online banks don’t offer outgoing wire transfer services, which could be a big problem for home buyers.
  • If you’re using an online bank to save for your down payment, plan ahead. Make sure you can make a wire transfer, or make a plan in advance to move your down payment to a bank that can.

When I started thinking about buying a home, I opened a high-yield savings account to save for it, and I chose an online bank.

About a year later, I found the house I was looking for, made an offer on it, had that offer accepted, and set up a date for the closing.

The morning of the planned closing, I intended to wire the money to the title company — a pretty typical part of home buying, and required in my state for an amount of money the size of a down payment. I had the information I needed to send it, and I pulled up my account to get the wire started.

But, I couldn’t find a way to do it on my online bank’s website. After some looking, one line on the bank’s frequently asked questions page stopped both me and my closing agent in our tracks: ‘Outgoing wire transfers are not available.’

I called the bank, but the only other solutions took days

I’d never even thought about needing to make a wire transfer before my home purchase. I didn’t think I needed to look in advance to make sure the bank offered them, either —I just assumed all banks did. But, you know what they say about assumptions.

I was panicked. I called the customer service line. One representative said the best he could do would be to mail me a paper check. This was Wednesday, and the earliest that check would arrive would be Saturday. It would mean pushing my closing until the next week, and moving my move-in date to the next weekend. There had to be a better way.

Another call to the online bank later in the day had me talking to a different customer service representative; he had another idea. He could increase my daily transfer limits to $20,000, the set up ACH transfers to move the full balance to my checking account over three

Rising turnover at online bathroom retailer

Revenues and profitability have seen strong growth in the recently filed accounts for online bathroom retailer Victoriaplum.com for the year ended 29 February 2020.

The company, which was acquired by Yorkshire-based private equity investor Endless LLP in October 2019, reported turnover of £70.9m (up more than 11% on prior year) and EBITDA of £2.1m.

It also recorded an operating loss before exceptional items of £0.7m (2018: £0.2m).

The firm’s latest annual report notes: “During a period when many of the company’s competitors have suffered financial losses, and in certain cases closure, the directors believe the continued improvements that have been made to the business have created the foundations for sustainable growth and further improvements to profitability.

“To facilitate future growth and create shareholder value the business will continue to invest in its infrastructure across the brand, IT platform, operations and people resources.”

In the period of trading since the year ended 29 February 2020, the company has seen further improved performance, with double-digit year-on-year sales growth and profitability significantly ahead of expectations.

Chief executive officer, Paul McClenaghan, said: “We continue to invest heavily in technology to take full advantage of the change in customer behaviour that has seen many shoppers migrate online.

“I am particularly encouraged by the growth of our differentiated offering that continues to reduce our reliance on ‘product and price’.

“The launch of our new Design & Installation service has been very well received by our customers and further differentiates us from the price-led competitors.

“Our Trade business continues to grow, as does the economic advantage of this route to market.”

Matthew Jubb, Partner at Endless LLP: “We have been delighted by the progress made by Paul and the team following our investment in October 2019.

“The results to February 2019 are just the foundations for what is proving to be a very exciting 2020 for the business with trading having been so strong in recent months.

“We are proud to be the investor behind a longstanding Yorkshire business and to support the management team with its plans, which we believe give good reason to be excited about Victoria Plum’s future. “

Best Places to Shop for Affordable Home Decor Online, According to Pro Designers

When the dream home on our Pinterest boards meets the reality of our bank accounts, we have to get a little creative with our design plans. Even professional interior designers have to work within the constraints of a client’s budget. So to find the best sources for million-dollar decor at a price we can actually afford, we asked those who would know best: the design pros. Here, the interior designers behind the 2020 Real Simple Home (take the video tour here!) reveal their go-to sources for inexpensive (yet stylish) home decor. Let the online shopping commence.

Urban Outfitters

“Urban Outfitters has really developed an amazing home decor collection over the last few years,” says designer Joy Cho. “While they are meant for college students and young adults, the styles are on trend and chic and offer very affordable options when you’re not quite ready to invest in forever pieces just yet.”

What to look for: “They have beautiful and affordable dinnerware sets, modern rugs that are super affordable, and home decor accessories that mix in nicely with what you already have.”

“My go-to is Etsy since I’m big on vintage shopping and you can find a huge range of stuff—from vintage grain sacks to be made into pillows to mid-century furniture,” says designer Max Humphrey. “I like that you’re supporting individual sellers and that vintage shopping is a form of sustainable shopping since it’s all about reuse.”

Brooklyn-based interior designer Kate Hamilton Gray also listed Etsy among her favorites. “You can find really fun custom lighting designs, some are made to order internationally and take a little time to get, but it’s reliable,” she explains.

Online home decor retailer Ballard Designs to open Houston store

Ballard Designs, a catalog and online retailer of furniture and home decor, will open a store in the Houston market in Rivers Oaks Shopping Center.

The Atlanta-based omnichannel retailer will take over the 10,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Gap Stores in February, the company announced.

Ballard Designs joins other design and furniture stores in Weingarten Realty Investors’ renovated River Oaks center as it continues its brick-and-mortar expansion. The Houston store will be the chain’s 16th since first opening stores 2007.

“We’ve been serving Houston designers and homeowners for 35 years through our catalog, so we already have a large following here,” Dominic Milanese, senior director of retail for Ballard Designs, said in an announcement.

Ballard is targeting a soft opening in early 2021. Social distancing protocols will be in place.

“Shopping is one of the Top 10 things to do in Houston,” Milanese said. “And at Ballard, we have such a robust assortment, we expect people to love our upholstery and larger furniture pieces, but also to stop in for smaller accessories as well.”

The location on West Gray Street near Shepherd Drive is close to the affluent River Oaks and Montrose neighborhoods, a couple of miles west of downtown. Weingarten Realty is developing the 30-story Driscoll at River Oaks apartment tower in the center, with opening planned in mid 2021.

Ballard Designs also has stores in Fort Worth and Dallas. The company is part of Qurate Retail Group, which also includes QVC, HSN, Zulily, Frontgate, Garnett Hill, Grandin Road and Ryllace.

Must-Have Fall Decor Finds to Score Online from T.J. Maxx and Marshalls

Decorating for fall is one of my favorite things. As soon as the first leaf falls from a tree, I’m busting out the decorative pumpkins, plaid blankets, and fall-scented candles. And every year, I convince myself that I need to go out and buy new pumpkins or pillows to change up my decor a tiny bit. Typically I go to T.J. Maxx and pick out a few things to spruce up my apartment—and since their decor section is pretty affordable, I can pick up a couple of new items without spending a ton of money.

This year I am more excited than ever to decorate for the season (after working from home for six months, I’m tired of staring at the same things all day long), but because of the ongoing pandemic, I don’t feel totally comfortable going in and out of stores unless it’s for something I really need. Luckily, I can still do my seasonal T.J. Maxx and Marshalls shopping while sitting on my couch at home.

Last fall, Marshalls launched an online store for the first time, and sister brand T.J. Maxx followed soon thereafter. After pausing all online ordering in March due to the pandemic, The TJX Companies (which owns T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and HomeGoods) fully re-launched their online stores just in time for the fall shopping season.

If you’re in need of a little fall refresh too, here’s everything I’ve recently added to my cart at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls.

Ceramic Pumpkin

Ceramic figures are this year’s biggest holiday decor trend (these vintage ceramic Christmas trees are back in style) and I’ve been loving all of the ceramic pumpkin options. This pink pumpkin is made from pink and gold glazed ceramic and measures about 8 inches. Use it to dress up a fall mantel or mix it in with a pumpkin centerpiece for Thanksgiving dinner.

Buy It: Ceramic Iridescent Pumpkin ($13, Marshalls)

Pumpkin Pillows

Why order just one fall pillow when you can order three? This 3-pack of 16-inch pillows is decorated with a different plaid pumpkin design. And at just under $30, the pillows come out to be just $10 each. The orange and black color scheme is neutral enough to put out in September but festive enough to carry into the Halloween season.

Buy It: 3-Pack Pumpkin Pillows ($30, T.J. Maxx)

Halloween Gnome

Gnomes aren’t just for Christmas! This 21-inch black and orange figure makes a fun addition to any fall or Halloween decorating scheme. Display this gnome on your front porch on dry days, or set him in front of your fireplace to tie the room together.

Buy It: Fabric Gnome ($10, T.J. Maxx)

Friendsgiving Book

I love a good coffee table book, and this Friendsgiving-themed one is filled with gorgeous photography you’ll enjoy looking at all season long. Plus, it’s got tons of fall recipes and decor ideas you can use right now. By the time Thanksgiving rolls around, you’ll be ready to

Coronavirus: ‘I paid for my student house, now all my lectures are online’

Rhiannon, a student at St Andrews

Image caption

Rhiannon is a student at St Andrews

University students have been telling the BBC how they were only told that most of their courses in the coming term will be taught online after paying hundreds of pounds for accommodation far from home.

Sara is a third year student from Leeds, studying international development at King’s College London, at a cost of £9,250 for the year. She says she was told her course would be completely online this term on 1 September – the day she began paying almost £3,000 for her accommodation.

Sara moved home to Leeds in March, at the start of lockdown, She says she has hardly had any lectures since February, when university staff went on strike.

In an email, seen by the BBC, she was then told “all teaching for final year students” will be online this term – including seminars and dissertation supervisions. In-person teaching in her second term “will depend on the Covid-19 situation closer to the time”.

It’s left her feeling short-changed. “If I knew that we were going to be online for the first semester I wouldn’t have got accommodation for this term at all,” Sara says.

She says she’s had little guidance about what campus life will look like and whether she will need to – or be able to – spend any time there.

“Do I need to be in London or not? Do I need to go in or not? There’s no point in [just] sitting in my house,” she says. “I do think there should be some kind of reduction with everything online. You still get an education but they should reduce the amount you’re paying.”

The University of St Andrews also announced at the end of August that some courses would be entirely online in the first seven weeks of term.

Many students moving into halls for their first year had already signed their contracts by the time the announcement was made, while many second and third year students in private accommodation signed contracts months ago.

Lottie, a third-year student in philosophy and history of art, says the university had initially encouraged students to return to the town.

“In June or July, they said that all students should plan to come back to St Andrews at the start of term and it would be dual teaching – everything they could do in person they would do, with the rest online.

“They did say they would give people the option to study completely online from home, but when you applied to do that you needed to have a specific reason.”

Rhiannon, another student at St Andrews studying international relations, is paying £525 a month for a room in a shared house.

“Our house has been empty since March. I would have stayed at home, and cancelled my rental contract. I actually tried to negotiate with my landlord in June because of the uncertainty and the landlord was completely inflexible.”

The University of St Andrews blamed the
