Welcome to Ministry of Interior Affairs, a new feature that highlights the interior design and functionality of some of the most popular vehicles available in Canada.

Here’s a bold claim: I think that what we’re looking at here, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS, might just be the most beautiful interior you’ll find in any three-row SUV on the market.

Of course, this comes with some caveats. Number one: at a list price of $133,500 with options, it’s certainly not for the faint of wallet. Number two: every single one of the men who looked at this disagreed with me. The leather fitted here is a gorgeous, rich dark grey as opposed to black, the laser-cut Burmester speaker grilles are some of the prettiest you’ll find anywhere, and vast expanses of open-pore wood are far classier than glossy finishes, but these details were lost on them. They like lots of contrasting colours and shiny things, it seems.

In a lower-priced SUV, I wouldn’t necessarily disagree, mainly because the alternative tends to be a bland black-on-black motif. But by the time I’m spending six figures on a vehicle, I want it to feel like arm candy, like an attractive man in a well-fitted suit. And the redesigned, third-generation GLS fits the bill.

But just as importantly, it also happens to make good use of its ample space and translates it into practicality. In the rearward cargo area, 355 litres will fit behind the third-row seats, which is just enough to position our trusty jogging stroller upright and still get the hatch closed. Beneath the load floor, there’s a spare tire and a convenient spot for tonneau cover storage. Two sets of buttons drop both of the rear rows at once or each individually: doing the latter opens up 1,380 litres of space behind the second row and 2,400 litres behind the first. While the third-row seats fold nicely flat, the second-row seats don’t get to quite as tight a fit.

The third row is easy to access, as long as you’re patient with power function while holding down the button on the second-row seatback. These seats are meant to shift with an installed child seat in place; we found this finicky in our testing as the car seat’s high back kept catching on the headrest, so car seat design could be a factor here.

Once you’re into the third row, you’ll find two comfortable and roomy seats with plenty of head room, each with a cupholder and not one but two USB-C connections. The leg room back there worked for me, but our taller observers banged their knees somewhat. Both third-row positions have the hardware necessary to install forward-facing LATCH-equipped child seats, meaning that the GLS can support up to four car seats in total.

Mercedes-Benz is committed to launching at least 10 electric cars by the end of 2022.

The first has been revealed as the EQC small SUV, and others in the pipeline that we know of include the EQA and EQB compact SUVs, electric commercials like the eVito and eSprinter vans, and an EQE sedan and EQE SUV.

We now have fresh spy shots of an EQS, a large electric sedan to sit alongside the latest S-Class. Mercedes will launch it in 2021, meaning we’ll likely see it arrive as a 2022 model.

The latest prototypes have lost a lot of the camouflage gear of earlier testers, revealing that the EQS is a liftback sedan akin to the Tesla Model S, high-end versions of which will be its main target. Other targets will include the new Lucid Air, an electric Jaguar XJ soming soon, and to a lesser extent the Porsche Taycan and related Audi E-Tron GT.

We also have some shots of the interior which features a large, portrait-style infotainment screen similar to the one in the new S-Class revealed earlier in September. Expect advanced voice activation, a head-up display with augmented reality graphics, and a digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics.

The car’s platform is a dedicated battery-electric design known as the MEA2 (Mercedes Electric Architecture), and the EQS is just the first application. MEA1 underpins the EQC and is based on a modified version of Mercedes’ MHA platform for SUVs with internal-combustion engines.

We can see that the EQS is a lot lower and sleeker than your typical Mercedes, including the CLS and AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. We can also see in some of the shots that the doors will be frameless and feature extendable handles. Mercedes previewed the design with the Vision EQS concept unveiled during September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.

The MEA2 platform has enabled the designers to add a long wheelbase and short overhangs front and rear, and although the EQS looks to be similar in size to the mid-size CLS, the interior space should be on par or better than the full-size S-Class.

Given the rapid advancement in battery technology, Mercedes is keeping quiet on specs for its future electric cars. However, we know the EQS will come in several grades including one with a range of 435 miles when measured on the WLTP test cycle used overseas. This could still result in a range of over 400 miles when measured on the stricter EPA test cycle.

There’s also talk of a Mercedes-AMG version of the EQS packing performance similar to the S63 sledgehammer, as well as an ultra-luxury Maybach version.

2021 Mercedes-Benz EQS: images give first look at interior

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to take on the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan and next-generation Jaguar XJ with its plush new EQS electric saloon, and fresh spy shots of a less-disguised prototype have emerged. 

Test cars have recently ditched the bulky body cladding and fake lights of previous testing mules, giving a glimpse of the headlight and tail-light designs and the overall body proportions. We’ve now had our first glimpse inside, too, and it looks like the EQS will have the same 11.9in central touchscreen and 12.3in digital display as the recently revealed 2021 S-Class, doing away largely with physical controls.

Mercedes previously confirmed a range of more than 700km (435 miles) for the EQS. Daimler boss Ola Källenius said the new model would also “set the benchmark” in terms of luxury, comfort and safety. 

The EQS will compete with the Taycan and its upcoming Audi E-Tron GT sibling in the flourishing electric premium saloon segment. Test mules feature a low, swooping roofline, with a slim headlight design among the more obvious visible features. 

The EQS is described as being roughly the size of the current CLS. Mercedes previously hinted at the styling of its first electric saloon with the EQS Vision concept at last year’s Frankfurt motor show. 

The latest addition to Mercedes’ EQ electric vehicle line-up will join the EQC mid-sized SUV and EQA compact SUV in showrooms in 2021. According to officials, the EQS name implies a level of luxury, comfort and features consummate to the company’s traditional S-Class.

It will head what the engineering boss of the EQ sub-brand, Michael Kelz, suggests will be a 10-strong electric model range by the middle of the 2020s.

Whereas the EQC is based on existing underpinnings from the GLC, the range-topping EQS will be the first EQ model to benefit from Mercedes’ dedicated Modular Electric Architecture (MEA).

We’ve known for a little while now that the upcoming all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQS would take some inspiration from the company’s newly unveiled flagship S-Class. That’s understandable considering the EQS borrows a letter from the distinguished sedan. New spy photos give us a better look at the interior and just how close it is to the biggest and best Mercedes.

The most obvious connections between the two cars are the instrument and infotainment screens. A smaller, horizontal display shows the instruments, and a long, cascading vertical screen handles infotainment duties. The dashboard behind the displays also has a gentle curve downward toward the occupants, and center air vents sit at the top above the infotainment screen.

There are some noteworthy differences, though. Unlike the S-Class, there’s no little cubbie behind the infotainment screen. Instead, the dash stretches, unbroken, behind the screen and flows into the center console. We can also catch a glimpse of the outer air vents, which are circular, rather than rectangular slots. This particular car also has an interesting patterned metal finish on the top of the dash.

The outside of the car is of course very different from the S-Class. The EQS is all flowing curves and smooth surfaces compared to the more traditional large sedan. It also appears that the EQS will be a hatchback. The powertrain will be the other major difference. The concept had dual electric motors making 469 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. The battery was rated at 100 kWh with an estimated range of 435 miles. These seem like reasonable production numbers considering competition such as the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air.
