Designed to look like a massive block of stone, the “Café au lait” kitchen by Milvia Hannah is the centrepiece of the family living area in a new home in Canterbury.

A large stone island forms the striking centrepiece of this kitchen in a Canterbury home – it’s coffee-coloured veining giving rise to the name of the project.

“Café au lait”, by Wellington kitchen designer Milvia Hannah of German Kitchens, reflects the owners’ designer for an “organic” kitchen featuring natural materials and colours.

The kitchen, which won a regional award in this year’s national NKBA Kitchen & Bathroom Awards, has also been shortlisted for the prestigious SBID International Design Excellence Awards in London – the winners will be announced later this month.

It caught the NKBA judges’ attention for both its looks and craftsmanship: “The manufacturing of the exquisite marble island would have been tricky, but it has been well executed,” the judges said. “The combination of materials works really well together. Appliance placement is good, and the lighting adds to the kitchen.”

Hannah says the kitchen was designed for the clients’ new house, where it needed to complement an elegant, open-plan interior, in a cohesive way.

Recessed seating at one end cannot be seen from the front of the island – it was designed this way to maintain the sense of the island being a large block of stone.

The main feature of the Eggersmann German kitchen, was to be the island, and Hannah says it needed to look good when viewed from all angles. It also had to be ergonomic, with a strong organic aesthetic.

To this end, hand-picked natural stone was selected for the island benchtops, drawer fronts, side panels, recessed handles, plinths and integrated sink.

“This allowed the island to feature as a block of stone, keeping the uniformity of the texture and veining through all aspects of the design,” Hannah says.

Bold Italian lighting was chosen to reinforce the visual drama.

The island features numerous drawers for storage and vast bench spaces making it well suited to entertaining.

“There is a recessed seating area for two at the end,” says Hannah. “But the front face of the island hides this from view to create balance, symmetry and harmony. False panels were created to achieve this look.”

Matt natural stone with an organic structure was selected for the island, with a muted soft matt stone benchtop chosen for the other side. This was complemented by rough-sawn timber veneer for the cabinetry in a colour that was found in the natural stone.

New Jersey governor calls YouTubers’ massive party at ‘Jersey Shore’ house an ‘egregious display of knucklehead behavior’

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy again denounced the behavior of partygoers in the state, this time citing a recent house party that drew more than 1,000 guests and resulted in eight arrests.

“It was irresponsible from top to bottom in every respect,” Murphy said during a press conference Wednesday, calling the party, which was held on Monday night, an “egregious display of knucklehead behavior.”

The governor explained that young people can have fun — but must continue social distancing and wearing masks, as the US struggles to contain the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Since mid-August, the percent positivity rate among 14-18 year-olds has grown from 3% to 7%, while for 19-24 year-olds it’s risen from 2.7% to 7.1%, said state health commissioner Judy Persichilli.

“We are continuing to see case numbers climb among young people,” she said. “Many of these cases and clusters are a result of parties and social gatherings.”

Murphy made similar comments in late July, after it took police officers over 5 hours to break up a party with over 700 attendees.

“Come on folks! Come on,” Murphy said at the time. “That’s needlessly putting men and women in uniform and their families at risk.”

Monday’s party took place at a New Jersey boardwalk house featured in MTV’s “Jersey Shore.”

A group of YouTube pranksters, known as the Nelk Boys, organized a promotional event at the house, according to Seaside Heights Police Detective Steve Korman. The party was dispersed at about 9:30 p.m.

The Nelk Boys, who are from Toronto, currently have more than 5.73 million subscribers, according to their YouTube page.

The eight people arrested at the “Jersey Shore” house are between the ages of 18 and 26. Charges included disorderly conduct, obstruction, and resisting arrest, Seaside Heights police said in a press release.

Police also said that “glass bottles and rocks were thrown at officers during and after the arrest” of at least one of the eight people.

“I’m totally disgusted,” Seaside Heights Mayor Anthony Vaz said. “We would never recognize this type of activity in our community.”

The town’s bureau administrator, Christopher Vaz, also told CNN that there was no special event application or municipal approvals of any kind regarding the gathering and that the majority of attendees appeared to be “high school-aged kids.”

“Jersey Shore” member and longtime house owner Danny Merk said he took responsibility for the incident.

“The police handled it perfectly,” Merk said. “It just became crazy.”

The “Nelk Boys” did not respond immediately to CNN’s requests for comment.

As of Wednesday, New Jersey has had 197,792 confirmed cases of Covid-19, and 16,054 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University data.

Zimbabwe: Massive Boost for Chitungwiza Soup Kitchen

The popular Chitungwiza Soup Kitchen last week got a shot in the arm after a local bakery donated mealie-meal and bread towards the feeding of vulnerable people including children in Harare’s dormitory town.

NatBake donated five tonnes of mealie meal and bread as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, NatBake general manager Edmore Kanhukamwe said his company was aware of the difficulties during the current Covid-19 pandemic hence the donation.

“We understand how difficult it is especially this period of Covid-19 for voluntary organisations such as this one to mobilize resources and feed a constituency like the one Ms. Murozoki is taking care of, and this is why NatBake is donating (5) five tonnes of mealie meal to add to what is here.” said Kanhukamwe

In her acceptance speech founder of the soup kitchen registered as Kuchengetana Trust, Samantha Murozoki said she was overwhelmed by NatBake’s gesture.

“I am highly overwhelmed by the gesture shown by NatBake. With the donation it eventually means that I will not be worried for the next month,” said Murozoki

She says they serve 3000 meals a day, starting with porridge in the morning and later they serve sadza around 3pm.

The Soup kitchen became talk of town in April when the Government imposed the 21 day lockdown to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.
