Ghetto Gastro Teamed Up With Crux to Launch a Killer Kitchen Appliance Collab

A recent photo on Ghetto Gastro’s Instagram shows an olive oil-laden cake, finished in a crisscrossing pattern of white LVs and four-pointed stars—the Louis Vuitton Damier. “Eat up the drip,” Ghetto Gastro co-founder Chef Lester Walker captioned it. Before that, the team was advertising an Instagram Live hosted by themselves and Samin Nosrat, the woman who reacquainted us all with the wonders of salt, fat, acid, and heat, for New York Times Cooking. Tonight, Ghetto Gastro’s got Matty Matheson of Vice’s Munchies fame talking with co-founder Jon Gray about his new, homestyle cookbook in a virtual event put on by the Strand bookstore in New York.

The collective, which began in part to showcase the culinary excellence of the Bronx, has cemented itself as the “Black Power kitchen of tomorrow,” intertwining the issues of racism with food insecurity, to name just one talking point. It disperses cooking vibes, urges followers to vote, sells seriously cool merch, and spurs hard conversations about inclusion and inequality in the food world. And as that little snapshot of Instagram activity shows, Ghetto Gastro, under co-founders Walker, Gray, and Pierre Serrao, is tapping into a culinary corner of the internet that’s young, passionate, and hungry.

So it makes a whole lot of sense that it’d join up with Crux, a New York-centric cookware brand (you might recognize its air fryer), on a new line of kitchen appliances. Those appliances are striking in appearance. The cause behind them is even more so: All the proceeds of sales from the Ghetto Gastro x Crux collaboration through October will go to Colin Kaepernick’s Know Your Rights Camp, which is working to empower the next generation of Black and brown leaders. That certainly sweetens the deal.

Carson Kitchen’s Killer Shrimp Recipe

Carson Kitchen opened more than six years ago on Carson Avenue in Las Vegas. The name celebrates the street where it sits, and also the history of Nevada and its capital city.

Owner Cory Harwell recently brought it to downtown Salt Lake City at 241 West 200 South.

Cory joined us to talk about some of the dishes on the menu, and also to share one of his favorite recipes.

Killer Shrimp Recipe
4oz Raw Shrimp 21/25 P&D
1oz Buttermilk
2oz Nash Flour
2oz Aji Amarillo cream
1oz Pickled Jalapeno
To Taste Lemon Zest
To Taste Salt

1. Cut shrimp into three pieces and soak in buttermilk.
2. Squeeze out excess liquid when an order comes in and dredge in nash flour.
3. Fry at 385 degrees to a light golden brown, 1-2 minutes.
4. Pinch of salt and toss in Aji amarillo cream till coated
5. Plate in bowl and top with pickled jalapeno and lemon zest

* 21/25 P&D- size of shrimp, peeled and deveined

‘Murders at White House Farm’ actor captures many sides of killer

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 23 (UPI) — On Aug. 8, 1985, five members of the Bamber family were killed in Nevill and June Bambers’ home in Essex, England. The new HBO Max series, The Murders at White House Farm, explores how son Jeremy Bamber kept the community debating his guilt, even after his conviction for the murders.

Freddie Fox plays Jeremy, who is serving a life sentence for the murders. When the series begins, Jeremy calls police to the scene at White House Farm, claiming his sister Sheila (Cressida Bonas) sounded erratic on the phone.

“Director Paul Whittington and I decided that we wanted to create as plausible an appearance of somebody suffering in grief for as long as possible,” Fox said on a recent Television Critics Association panel. “There’s a certain elliptical quality, an enigmatic nature to the character, which I really wanted to play up.”

Series creator and executive producer Kris Mrksa said Jeremy’s behavior in the aftermath of the murders led to a lot of the disagreements about the case. It was important to Mrksa that Fox’s performance capture how much Jeremy fluctuated.

“[Jeremy goes] from enormously demonstrative grief to almost a flippancy,” Mrksa said. “He is so unpredictable and mercurial, moving from charming to cold and disengaged.”

Controversy still surrounds the case. A Jeremy Bamber Innocence Campaign is fighting for his release.

“Jeremy Bamber recently had his third appeal and has a huge support group suggesting that he didn’t do it,” Fox said.

The series bases its depiction of events on two sources. Carol Ann Lee researched the case and wrote the book, The Murders At White House Farm. Colin Caffell, Sheila’s husband, wrote the book, In Search of Rainbow’s End, which the series also credits.

“I was then very fortunate to spend quite a lot of time with Colin,” Fox said. “He was incredibly open and giving with his memories.”

Fox also visited locations relating to the Bamber family. He said he went to the church graveyard where the Bambers are buried, Jeremy’s house and even pubs that Jeremy frequented.

“I would meet people,” Fox said. “They would all be giving me their different views on what the case or the outcome of the case.”

In addition to the Bamber family and people in the Essex community, Fox said he also spoke with criminologists, criminal psychologists and officers who worked the case. One person Fox did not consult was Jeremy. Fox says he avoided Jeremy for the actor’s own well-being.

“Were I to have met the real Jeremy Bamber, there would have been a certain amount of baggage that I wouldn’t have been able to escape,” Fox said.

Fox said no video of Jeremy speaking exists, but he had a wealth of audio recordings to which he listened. Tapes of Jeremy guided Fox’s performance, though the actor said he did not mimic Jeremy’s voice.

“I created my own Bamber as opposed to a facsimile of the Bamber,” Fox said.

Most kitchen designs work with a very limited pallet. But when you are coming up with kitchen remodeling ideas it's important to remember there is nothing forcing you to stick with beiges, browns, blacks and whites.

Incorporating slightly off-neutral colors (such as burnt reds that appear brown and ultra-dark blues which might as well be black) is a good start, but there's nothing stopping you from going further. Light blues and greens, bright reds and oranges and yellows, accents of purple on your trim … all of these colors can easily find their place in a properly planned kitchen remodeling project.

There's no need to make your kitchen look like a child's playhouse, but there's also no need to be a puritan with your designs either.

If you have the space, or if you are able to create the space, than you should consider working with an open kitchen design.

Instead of hiding your kitchen away in the corner of your house, knock down the walls and free up your space. For the most part, open kitchen designs feature a counter or island that helps to both provide a small separation between the two adjoining rooms, and to provide a space for others to sit and socialize with you while you cook.
