How this Hong Kong apartment’s views informed its interior design

A good view is a terrible thing to waste. And the view from the 690 sq ft Wong Chuk Hang flat that Tommy Hui Shui-cheung was hired to renovate is truly spectacular: a sweeping panorama of Bennett’s Hill and Aberdeen Harbour, with folds of greenery rolling into the sea.

“We wondered how to focus the interior on the views,” says Hui, founder of local architecture firm TBC Studio.

The clients, a young couple – a nurse and an urban planner – plan to have children, but for now they wanted a sanctuary where they could relax with family and friends. Hui worked with them to create a design he calls the Bird Hide, a reference to lookouts built to observe nature, birds especially, at close range.

Hui wanted to make the flat as calming as its views, so he chose a relaxed palette of blond wood, complemented by a creamy pastel blue-green – the colour of the sea on a sunny day.

“We separated the living room and the dining room into two material finishes: wood veneer on one side and paint on the other,” says Hui. “For the paint, it needed to be a colour that wasn’t too dark, something more natural and cosy.”

The layout needed small changes, too. The flat’s front door opens directly into the dining and living area, so Hui used a slatted partition to create a foyer offering a gradual transition into the flat.

The next challenge was the kitchen. As in most Hong Kong flats, the small kitchen was closed off from the living and dining areas.

“It felt quite narrow,” says Hui. “So we demolished the solid partition and changed it into a glass wall so you can see through to the windows and the living space.”

Although open kitchens are now fashionable, Hui notes that they are not always practical.

“Enclosed kitchens are more functional for a lot of Chinese families because there can be a lot of smoke or smells from the cooking.” With the glass wall, he says, “it feels open but it can still be closed”.

Inside a Hong Kong home infused with Japanese aesthetics

A hallway leads from the living and dining areas to the bathroom and bed-rooms. The living room’s wood veneer wall wraps around the corner, leading to a built-in cabinet in the passage Hui designed to showcase the couple’s keepsakes. Across the hallway is a toilet and a bath-room, which the clients were inspired to separate after travelling to Japan.

“In Japan, these are often separate so they can be used by two people at the same time,” says Hui.

In addition, Japanese hygiene practices have long revolved around concepts of purity and impurity. Bathing

An Italian luxury yacht builder has partnered with Hong Kong-based interior designers to create new bespoke “floating villas” targeting the wealthy in Hong Kong and Asia looking for an alternative form of holiday homes.

In an attempt to attract more buyers, the builder Sanlorenzo will be working with Hong Kong-based Steve Leung Designers to infuse luxury residential designs into the compact space of a yacht in an attempt to redefine and elevate the lifestyle among the region’s millionaires.

The new partnership will bring Leung and his team’s expertise to the rest of Sanlorenzo’s range of yachts through their “design to measure” style, according to Sanlorenzo, a shipbuilder founded in 1958 and based in Ameglia in northern Liguria region.

“Yacht design has long been dominated by a Western lifestyle approach, which is very different from the way we live in Asia, especially in China,” said Leung, an architect and interior designer whose firm was engaged in the Novotel City project in Tung Chung and the Orchard Residences luxury apartments in Singapore, among others.

Simpson Marine Group, which represents Sanlorenzo in the regional yacht markets, has doubled its sales in Asia this year, including nine yachts by the Italian builder in Hong Kong. They contributed more than 60 per cent of the group turnover, according to its managing director Mike Simpson.

The pickup suggests the economic crisis from the Covid-19 pandemic has not done much damage to the wealth of the richer segment of the population. The number of millionaires in Hong Kong rose 22 per cent this year, while China’s billionaires have this year rebuilt their net worth to the size of the Russian economy amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Leung has previously designed the interiors for Sanlorenzo’s SX88 yacht, which measures 27m in length with four cabins with en suite bathrooms. It features a flybridge with barbecue facilities, while the indoor area has a traditional Chinese round-table dining area.

“During the entire design process of shaping a villa-like yacht, we reimagined the spatial configuration of the yacht based on the owner’s lifestyle, utilising the yacht mainly as a ‘floating space’ for social entertainment,” said Leung. “We also added a subtle Asian touch, especially in the seating zone of the living and the dining rooms, ensuring a comfortable capacity for big groups’ gatherings.”

Leung hopes the venture can establish another new take on the yacht design by integrating international lifestyle with local cultural features, to attend to local tastes.

hong kong apartment refurbishment by lim + lu blurs the line between interior & exterior

situated on the first floor of an old building in metropolitan hong kong, architecture practice lim + lu presents the refurbishment of a 167 sqm apartment for a japanese family of four. dubbed the grosvenor residence, the project aims to allow nature to breathe life into its redesigned interior, creating a space that refreshes its residents. using neutral colors, earthy textures, open spaces, and lots of greenery, the architects have generated a vibrant environment, blurring the line between the indoor and the outdoor world.

lim + lu designed a tranquil home office environment to tackle the new frontier of work-from-home culture

the apartment overlooks a tree line, which inspired lim + lu to enlarge all pre-existing small windows into large antique style steel fenestration. in this way, more natural light was brought into the living space, illuminating it sufficiently. the black wooden blinds and delicate brass details accentuate the feeling of an elegant yet quaint summer home. the room is completed with wooden slats and rattan, which generate richness in texture, while keeping a clean aesthetic that adheres to the overall feel. altogether, these elements work simultaneously, ensuring that the family lives in understated luxury, in close connection with nature.

for the children's room, the idea was to incorporate a sense of privacy in an open space without the isolation of separate spaces to foster a sense of togetherness

taking into account that the clients often work from home, lim + lu aimed to form a functional, tranquil space, where residents can think and focus, energized by nature and greenery, though never distracted by them. the tall windows and brass accents serve as a modern interpretation of a study, while providing an atmosphere that encourages creativity and positive work mentality. an abundance of daylight, neutral colors, and wooden elements adorn the room and balance the visual characteristics harmoniously.

the children’s bathroom was designed with a traditional japanese bathroom in mind, with a deep soaking tub and a separate shower space. as these kinds of bathrooms are typically wet rooms, an acid-washed granite finishes the surfaces of the space, emphasizing the calming, meditative atmosphere. with these soaking rooms deeply tied to the concept of renewal, lim+lu hopes to provide that same revitalization of body and spirit to the residents.

to create an open space layout that flows seamlessly between the kitchen, dining, living room, study, and balcony, the original enclosed kitchen was opened up and combined with the rest of the rooms. this large open area now serves as a family room, where all members gather whether it is over a meal in the dining room or over activities by the couch. all while enjoying the scenery through the large balcony doorway, the view framed by palm trees and greenery to really bring to life the feeling of the perfect summer getaway right at home.
