Local groups hand out garden kits

Even though many local health and agriculture community groups can’t hold big events because of the coronavirus pandemic, they’re still at work, encouraging people to eat and grow vegetables.

“We have seen such incredible increase in demand for local produce and also food donations and distribution,” said Sara Bernal, a program manager with the Center for Land-Based Learning.

That’s why her organization along with Kaiser Permanente, the Latino Leadership Council, La Familia, Health Education Council and Soil Born Farms are bringing the farm to families through healthy garden kits the groups assemble and distribute to those most in need of nourishment.

The kits include vegetables — vibrant-in-color and flavor, fruits — grown at local farms, and “starts,” so people can plant their own healthy gardens.

“Everybody benefits from eating more fresh food,” said Bernal, who hopes the kits offer healthy inspiration to those who receive them. “That’s really our goal… to introduce the concepts and ingredients of fresh eating, and maybe not even introduce it, but just reinvigorate the enthusiasm for eating fresh fruits and vegetables.”

Doctors agree, saying programs like this spark important conversations about how good nutrition has a positive effect on overall health.

“It’s also a step towards looking at what creates diabetes in certain demographics and how can we impact that, heart disease all of the things that we do very well,” said Kaiser Permanente Physician in Chief, Dr. Rob Azevedo. “This just enhances that, but for our community, not just for our Kaiser Permanente members.”

The groups identified 150 older adults and families that could benefit from the kits which include the following items:

  • Measured potting soil
  • Fabric grow bag
  • Plant starts
  • Growing instructions
  • Ready-to-eat fresh produce
  • Recipes that incorporate produce in kit

Three different kits have been distributed to recipients over a six-week period — a welcome surprise to the seniors at the Davis Migrant Center, according to center manager Roberto Guevara.

“Most of these families just have one income and it’s a very low income,” said Guevara. “They were very grateful to be receiving this kind of stuff.”

The program is promoting an interest in eating healthier in the process of helping recipients grow the healthy food that will help them do just that.

“I can think of no other time in our history that it isn’t more important that we come together support each other and really create wellness in our communities,” said Azevedo.

The organizations also encourage novice gardeners to flex their green thumbs, reminding people that you don’t need a big backyard to get your garden growing. A flower pot on a front porch or apartment balcony is a good start.

Barr accused of ‘working hand in glove’ with Team Trump, White House

Donald Trump appeared certain that, at long last, he had evidence of a nefarious election scheme. As the president told the public, a handful of ballots in a Republican-friendly county in Pennsylvania had been thrown in the trash, when they should’ve been counted for the GOP ticket. The claims were soon elevated by the White House, the Trump campaign, the Justice Department, and conservative media.

It wasn’t long, however, before the story faded — because it wasn’t quite true. There was an administrative error in Luzerne County, Pa., but there was no evidence of a local conspiracy to rig the election for Joe Biden. Those looking for proof to substantiate the president’s conspiracy theories would have to look elsewhere.

But the story did raise an entirely different set of questions, not about election officials in a midsize county in northeastern Pennsylvania, but about Attorney General Bill Barr.

Why did the Republican lawyer brief Trump directly on the unimportant case? Why did Barr’s Justice Department ignore its own guidelines and issue a statement about an incomplete investigation? Why did the DOJ statement include factual errors?

There’s no reason to be coy. The attorney general has made little effort to hide his efforts to politicize his office and federal law enforcement, and the Luzerne County incident appeared to be part of Barr’s election-season tactics.

Making matters worse, of course, is the scope of these tactics. Politico connected the dots this way:

The prosecution of Michael Flynn. A Senate investigation into the provenance of the Steele Dossier. The nascent federal probe of discarded absentee ballots in Pennsylvania. In recent days, the Justice Department has declassified or disclosed sensitive materials related to each of these proceedings that, on the surface, have little to do with each other. Yet within hours, President Donald Trump had weaponized each to boost his reelection campaign.

Last week, James D. Herbert, a current federal prosecutor, wrote in the Boston Globe about “the unprecedented politicization of the office of the attorney general,” adding that Barr “acts as though his job is to serve only the political interests of Donald J. Trump. This is a dangerous abuse of power…. For 30 years I have been proud to say I work for the Department of Justice, but the current attorney general has brought shame on the department he purports to lead.”

He’s hardly alone. Gene Rossi, a former federal prosecutor from Virginia, told Politico, “The attorney general is working hand in glove with the White House and the Trump re-election campaign.”

The handling of the Luzerne County matter was especially egregious, though it might be easier to overlook if it were an isolated incident. It’s not. Vox had a related report along these lines:

Most notably, a US attorney made a vague, partially inaccurate statement Thursday about problems with a handful of military ballots in one Pennsylvania county…. Also Thursday, Barr released some information that he suggested cast further doubt on a major source for the Steele dossier, sending it in

The shifting interior: Chris Smith’s ‘Second Hand Smoke’

The shifting interior: Chris Smith’s ‘Second Hand Smoke’

The home-recording Melbourne guitarist’s first album in more than a decade is free-ranging yet ruminative

Chris Smith works at his own pace, in his own inscrutable style. The Melbourne guitarist and songwriter’s new album Second Hand Smoke (It Records) is his first since 2006’s Bad Orchestra, which came six years after the previous one. Smith continues to revel in contrast and fragmentation, with the new LP emerging only after Smith had brought around 50 hours of primarily home recordings to producer John Lee. Even after being distilled into a 12-song album, it plays like outsider art, snaking along disparate paths while looking stubbornly inward.

That’s fitting for someone who cut his teeth playing alternately frenzied and lethargic noise-rock in Geelong’s The Golden Lifestyle Band in the mid 1990s, yet also collaborated with New Zealand experimental musician Peter Jefferies. Smith’s solo work began as mostly textural, droning instrumentals (see 1998’s Cabin Fever and 2000’s Replacement), before Bad Orchestra edged closer to underground rock again (especially on the scorching stand-out “Living Dead Blues”). Bad Orchestra was reissued in 2014 on Hermit Hut, the small US label run by another cult guitarist: Ben Chasny of Six Organs of Admittance.

Second Hand Smoke takes cues from all of those phases, mingling windblown instrumental dirges with surprising melodicism and even folky balladry. Smith sings as well, though his vocals are often heavily distorted and sometimes layered, producing a sort of disembodied harmonising. Such askew juxtapositions materialise right from the opening track, “The Journalist”, on which an oddly sombre news report about actress Heather Locklear plays over Smith’s blown-out acoustic guitar, leisurely whistling and lyrics we can’t quite make out.

The vocal overlapping continues on the bluesy title track, pairing muddied sung and spoken parts against scratchy slide guitar in a way that recalls both Bill Callahan’s earliest work as Smog and Chris Knox’s contributions to Tall Dwarfs. Then comes a sandblasted squall of noise and distortion in the not-quite-minute-long “Damage”, a volatile turn that then bleeds into the soft bliss of “New Blossom”, a hazy narcotic ballad à la Mazzy Star. Smith’s voice is again distorted and mirrored by another set of his vocals, but this time it conveys a slower, sweeter mood that carries into lead single “Animal”, which, with its lonesome harmonica and chiming guitar twang, is the most traditional song here.

Smith even borrows the phrase “bright blessed day / dark sacred night” from that eternally hopeful standard “What a Wonderful World”, teasing at an inner peace that would have felt impossible during the onslaught of “Damage”. But with “New Blossom” in between, it actually makes sense. As on Bad Orchestra, these gradual shifts in mood allow Smith to range from roughly abrasive to whisper soft without losing the listener. That also means Second Hand Smoke should be listened to in order, in a single setting, especially since five of the seven songs after “Animal” are somewhat amorphous instrumentals that work

NGO asks interior minister to lend a hand in K Speu forest land protectionPhnom Penh Post

Chea Hean (not pictured) has said traders are selling more than 150ha in the Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary. CHEA HEAN VIA FACEBOOK

Anti-corruption, Natural Resource Protection and Civil Rights Protection (ACNCIPO) director Chea Hean said on Monday he is requesting help from Minister of Interior Sar Kheng to protect more than 150ha in the Phnom Oral Wildlife Sanctuary.

Hean said traders are selling the forest land.

He told The Post on Monday that he is preparing to send his letter on Tuesday. He is requesting intervention to assist the Kampong Speu provincial administration with confiscating the property from a woman named Sieang Samen, the wife of Ou Samrech Chesda, a well-known military official.

The land is located in Sre Kin village in Oral district’s Trapaing Chor commune in Kampong Speu province. Samen is accused of conspiring with authorities to sell the land two weeks ago.

Hean said Samen had people clear the land in 2018, but he had notified the Kampong Speu provincial administration to confiscate it.

Hean said Samen recently sold 150ha in violation of the Kampong Speu confiscation warrant.

“I request the Ministry of Interior to investigate those behind the sale of forest land in the conservation area in Sre Kin village.

“I would like to sue based on the illegal possession and sale of land in that area. This forest land must be kept as State property and the trees should be replanted. The perpetrators must be punished according to the law on protected areas,” Hean said.

Trapaing Chor commune chief Tep Nem said on Monday he had seen a letter of sale and transfer of land title signed by Sre Kin village chief Im Sorn.

However, he did not sign for acknowledgement or allow the sale, leaving the letter at the Trapaing Chor commune administration.

He said the land in the area is protected by a royal decree and there is also a confiscation warrant from the Kampong Speu provincial administration.

“I did not allow buying or selling because it is State land protected by a royal decree and there was a confiscation warrant from the province. I did not dare sign any document to buy or sell that land,” Nem said.

Sorn said on Monday he was aware of the buying and selling of forest land in the Oral Mountains in 2018, but recently he did not sign for Samen to buy or sell land in the area.

“In 2018, I knew they were buying and selling land, but not now. I do not dare sign because it is protected by royal decree,” Sorn said.

Samen could not be reached for comment on Monday.
