Trump admin warned veterans group of COVID-19 exposure: report

  • The White House reached out to a veterans organization to warn of potential COVID-19 exposure from a September 27 event honoring the families of fallen US service members, The Daily Beast reported.
  • The warning was sent on October 2, the same day President Donald Trump announced he tested positive for COVID-19.
  • The event was held the day after an event formally announcing Trump’s Supreme Court pick on September 26.
  • At least a dozen people who attended the Saturday event later tested positive for COVID-19.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

President Donald Trump’s administration told a veterans group about potential COVID-19 exposure from a September 27 event honoring the families of fallen US service members on October 2, the day that Trump announced his positive coronavirus diagnoses, The Daily Beast reported.

Timothy Davis, the CEO and President of The Greatest Generations Foundation, told the outlet that he got the notice from the White House’s Office of Public Liaison and that he’s wasn’t sure which person who attended the event’s positive diagnoses prompted the letter.

“The White House has been in daily contact with TGGF for contact-tracing purposes after alerting us on 10/2 of a possible COVID-positive person at the event so we could know there was a potential our attendees were exposed,” Davis told The Daily Beast.

The Washington Post reported that Trump and Vice President Mike Pence attended the event. Trump along with at least a dozen officials and staff in the White House have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Monday, Adm. Charles W. Ray, the vice commandant of the Coast Guard, also tested positive for the virus. Ray attended the event.

Photos from the event also showed most attendees not wearing masks or socially distancing, The Post reported.

The event honoring Gold Star families was held a day after more than 150 people gathered in the Rose Garden of the White House for an event where President Donald Trump officially announced his nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

At least a dozen people who attended the event, including first lady Melania Trump, White House press secretary, Kayleigh McEnany, Rev. John Jenkins, the president of Notre Dame University, and two Republican senators, have since tested positive.

It’s probable that the event was a super-spreading event that might have caused the cluster of cases in the White House.

The Daily Beast reported that attendees at the Sunday event were tested prior to the event, but one source told the outlet that an office in the White House had reached out to other attendees encouraging them to get a test.

“The communication breakdown during this is even worse than usual,” this source said. “Different departments and offices are not talking or communicating appropriately, people are doing different things, and officials are having trouble getting on the same page. The East Wing and the West Wing are dealing with this totally differently. It’s just a mess.”

TGGF and the White House did not reply to Business Insider’s

GOP women’s group releases latest round of House endorsements

Winning for Women Action Fund, a super PAC devoted to electing GOP women to office, released its latest round of House endorsements on Tuesday in a list obtained exclusively by The Hill.

The endorsed challengers include Victoria Spartz in Indiana’s fifth district, Yvette Herrell in New Mexico’s second district, Stephanie Bice in Oklahoma’s fifth, and Nancy Mace in South Carolina’s first. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates all of the races “toss-ups.”

The group also formally threw its support behind Lauren Boebert in Colorado’s third district, which Cook rates as “lean Republican.” Kat Cammack in Florida’s third congressional district and Lisa McClain in Michigan’s tenth district also received endorsements from Winning for Women.

Winning for Women also announced its support for a number of GOP House candidates it labeled as “Women on the Rise.” The list includes Anna Paulina Luna in Florida’s thirteenth district, Kim Klacik in Maryland’s seventh district, Lynne Blankenbeker in New Hampshire’s second district, and Esther Joy King in Illinois’s seventeenth district.

Additionally, the group endorsed Republican incumbents America Samoa Del. Amata Coleman Radewagen and Puerto Rico Del. Jenniffer González Colón.

“These women represent the best of the best. From veterans to nurses to small business owners, each of these candidates is uniquely qualified to serve her district in Congress,” the group’s political director Micah Yousefi said in a statement to The Hill.

Not only will Winning For Women’s PAC provide critical hard-dollar support to their campaigns, but it will also activate on their behalf a grassroots army of more than 800,000 members nationwide. It’s been a historic year for conservative women, and W4W is proud to continue supporting those exceptional candidates who will go to Washington to fight back against an extreme, liberal agenda.”

The endorsements come as a record number of Republican women run for office in the 2020 election cycle. Data released in May by the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University shows an overall uptick in women seeking seats in the House this year, with 490 filing to run so far.

Credit union group to spend $7 million on Senate, House races

A major trade group representing credit unions launched a multimillion-dollar spending campaign on Thursday in support of congressional candidates on both sides of the aisle.

The Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and its PAC, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council, said they plan to spend $7 million this cycle, with PAC donations supporting over 350 House and Senate candidates who have been credit union supporters.

In the 2018 midterms, CUNA and its PAC spent $6.8 million and in 2016 the groups spent $5.8 million.

CUNA has endorsed and launched ads for Sens. “All of our messaging for these candidates is entirely positive in nature,” Trey Hawkins, CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer for political action, told The Hill. “A lot of these close races for the House and Senate are turning really nasty and negative. Credit unions are typically held in really high regard by their members, and they have a high degree of credibility with their members and with the public as well.”

Hawkins noted that CUNA and its PAC are leaning into emerging technology platforms to run ads, including digital advertising on Hulu and Facebook. They also launched their ads to be ahead of early voting in most states.

“The other component of this is the timing of all of this and the fact that we’re highly cognizant that more people are voting earlier and in different ways than they have, because of the pandemic,” he said. “We’re really conscience of making sure that our communications in various races are timed to be ahead of early voting starting, or to coincide.”

While CUNA has endorsed and spent on Senate and House candidates, the trade group’s policy is to not endorse or spend in presidential elections and it does not plan to get involved in this year’s race.

CUNA also launched Credit Unions Vote this cycle, which is an initiative focused on getting credit union members to vote. One in three

Reports: Group of parents stop man accused of looking at teen under bathroom stall in Cracker Barrel

The man accused is a registered sex offender, according to records.

DUNCAN, S.C. — A North Carolina man has been arrested after he was caught looking under a woman’s bathroom stall at a South Carolina Cracker Barrel, police told multiple news outlets.

According to WYFF, Duncan Police Chief Carl Long said a 15-year-old saw Douglas Lane, 53, looking underneath the bathroom stall in the women’s bathroom of a Duncan area Cracker Barrel. She told police she noticed something moving at her feet and realized it was a man’s head coming from the stall beside hers, according to WSPA.

The girl then left the bathroom and reportedly told her father about it. Witnesses told WSPA the 15-year-old wasn’t the only girl in the bathroom.

Citing Chief Long, news outlets report Lane tried to get away, but the girl’s father and other fathers who knew about the alleged incident helped tackle him and kept him restrained until police arrived.

Chief Long told news outlets the parents were in town for a girls’ softball tournament, WYFF reported.

A witness submitted video from outside the Cracker Barrel to WYFF, which reportedly shows Lane on the ground with blood on his face and shirt.

Jail records show Lane was charged with voyeurism and marijuana possession.

According to records, Lane, who lives in Charlotte, NC, is a registered sex offender in North Carolina.

News outlets report that during his bond hearing Monday, a judge ordered Lane to be monitored by GPS and move to South Carolina. He cannot have any contact with the 15-year-old girl or her family, WSPA reports.
