Meet Me @ The Altar share “Garden,” become your new favorite pop-punk band

Who had Paramore down as the most influential band of their generation? Fifteen years on from the release of their debut album All We Know Is Falling, teenagers are still picking up guitars, getting in their feelings, and trying to emulate the Tennessee pop-punks. Not least the members of Meet Me @ The Altar — 19-year-old guitarist Téa Campbell, 21-year-old drummer Ada Juarez, and 19-year-old vocalist Edith Johnson — who all would have been infants when “Pressure” was making its way around torrent sites. Now they’re announcing that they’ve signed to emo bastion Fueled By Ramen, releasing a hugely satisfying new single called “Garden,” and setting themselves up as one of the most exciting young pop bands in the United States.

“Garden,” the video for which is premiering at the foot of the page, is a throwback in every sense: half-pace arpeggiated riffs, a massive chorus, chugging breakdowns thrown in so kids can let loose at a show (some day). Even the saturation on the video seems to have been ripped from an early-aughts MTV 2 marathon. The main difference here — other than the fact that Meet Me @ The Altar is comprised of three women of color, two of whom are gay — is that Campbell, Juarez, and Johnson bring a contagious energy to things. They clearly fucking love what they do. I’m a particular fan of Campbell, who can rip through riffs and trills with virtuosic abandon, but best of all looks shocked and overjoyed every time she does something complex or watches her bandmates do something cool. I’ve listened to this song every day for two weeks and woken up with it in my head just about every morning. It’s been great.

“’Garden’ is about being there for the people in your life who need you the most,” the band wrote in a statement to The FADER. “We wanted to write a super energetic song that was really positive, because a lot of pop-punk isn’t positive. It’s about white dudes, crying over their girlfriends.”

Fuck yeah. Watch the video for “Garden” below.

Your Favorite Apron and Kitchen Gear Companies Are Now Making Face Masks

Update, October 6, 2020: This article was originally published on April 27, 2020, and recently updated to include more shoppable masks.

The seamstresses at Tilit were already working from home when Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York put out a call on Twitter.

“On March 20, Cuomo had this call to action, saying that NYC was running out of PPE [personal protective equipment]. ‘Small businesses, small companies, get creative,’ was essentially what his Twitter message said, ‘and start helping out,’” says Jenny Goodman, chief operating officer of Tilit, which makes chef coats, aprons, and other “workwear” items for hospitality workers.

Within hours, the team settled on a no-brainer solution. As Goodman explains it, Alex McCrery, Tilit’s founder, happened to be in the office at that moment. “He cut a mask pattern and sewed a sample, and we were like, ‘Okay, let’s make masks.’”

Tilit is just one of many companies pivoting to masks, as it were. Dozens of apparel companies, big and small, are stepping up to use their facilities or distributors to produce face masks, though the scale and actual products vary. Some companies, like Nike, Eddie Bauer, Ralph Lauren, and Gap, are working to produce clinical-grade equipment that can be used in hospitals and are distributing directly to health care facilities.

Others are making fabric masks for customers, in the hope that their use can free up more medical-grade masks for the frontline workers who need them most. These include companies that typically manufacture aprons and other workwear for kitchen and restaurant use, like Tilit, as well as Hedley & Bennett, Blue Cut, Artifact, and CamCam. Food52 is also selling masks, made of denim and flannel and created in collaboration with canvas manufacturer Steele Canvas.

“With the CDC guidelines in place recommending cloth masks for everyone, and many grocery stores now requiring cloth masks to be worn by customers before entering, it’s safe to say people want to both protect themselves and donate to frontline health care workers at the same time,” says Food52 buyer Aja Aktay, who spearheaded the initiative with Steele Canvas.

Food52 clearly notes online that the masks “are not a substitute for N95 or surgical-grade masks and they are not FDA approved,” a disclaimer echoed on nearly all of the product pages for these masks. Rather, they’re intended for regular folks trying to minimize the risk they pose to others. As Vox.com explained, “Masks can help stop the spread of coronavirus not just by protecting the wearer, but by preventing the wearer — who could be an asymptomatic spreader — from breathing and spitting their germs everywhere.”

Between consumers’ growing awareness of the importance of face coverings and the changed CDC guidance, orders are coming in fast: Food52 sold through its first batch of masks within three days and is working to fulfill the current waitlist of orders by the end of April. At Tilit, Goodman says “the demand is crazy, so we’re literally sewing as fast

Carrie Underwood’s Favorite Kitchen Tool Is A Food Scale And Here’s Why

Carrie Underwood is one of America’s sweethearts, so any advice she shares with her fans deserves to be tested out. She shares her workouts and dietary habits for all to see on her Instagram, and in her recent book Find Your Path, she talks about why a kitchen scale is her favorite tool.

Carrie Underwood explained in her recent book “Find Your Path” that her favorite kitchen tool is a food scale.

While some celebrities stick to relatively strict diets, Carrie believes that portion control is the most important part of eating rather than counting calories or avoiding certain food groups.

Gallery: Brown Eggs Or White? And Other Grocery Questions Answered (The Daily Meal)

“Eyeballing just doesn’t work for me. If I try to eyeball portions, they creep up in size. If I put a cup of pasta on my plate but I don’t measure it, you can bet that what I think is a cup is actually closer to two cups. You’d be surprised at how inaccurate eyeballing it can be,” she wrote in her book.

In order to get those portions just right, she uses a digital food scale. By using a scale instead of estimating or using measuring cups Carrie finds it to be more accurate since different food has different weights.

“A cup of green beans, a cup of yogurt, and a cup of popcorn all have different weights, and measuring by cups or fractions of a cup isn’t very accurate,” she said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty,” Underwood says, “which is why one of my favorite tools is a digital kitchen scale. A scale tells me exactly how much I’m eating in a way a measuring cup can’t.”

Digital scales are also just great to have in the kitchen for cooking because you can measure ingredients more accurately if you prefer to work by using ratios rather than step-by-step instructions. Life is all about balance anyway, right?

You can order Carrie’s book Find Your Path on Amazon in hard-cover, Kindle, or audiobook.

Joanna Gaines’ 4 Favorite Kitchen Colors Aren’t What You’d Expect

Is shiplap a color?

Not exactly. But Fixer Upper host Joanna Gaines did transform the home renovation space with her unique design style that’s been described as “modern farmhouse chic.” Even years after her HGTV series ended, DIY enthusiasts are still obsessed with copying her look in their own homes.

And Gaines is happy to share advice with eager followers. She currently contributes to her quarterly magazine, Magnolia Journal, plus released an entire book focused on creating a beautiful home retreat you’ll never want to leave. Homebody: A Guide to Creating Spaces You Never Want to Leave is a bestseller.

Recently, the mother of five revealed what colors she thinks work best for a kitchen via her company, Magnolia Home.

‘Fixer Upper’ popularized 1 very specific style

The HGTV show that made Gaines famous was both celebrated and criticized for always sticking to a formula. Even though the series featured different clients with all sorts of homes, the result always had that Joanna Gaines touch. Some common themes included white walls, wood floors, neutral furniture, open shelving, and vintage-looking accessories.

But occasionally Gaines did step out of the box to include a modern piece of furniture or a wild pattern. And now that Fixer Upper is over, fans are starting to see even more facets to the renovation expert’s repertoire.

Like so many homeowners, Gaines knows that the center of any home is the place where the food gets made.

“The kitchen is the heartbeat of home, which makes it one of my favorite spaces to design. It’s been so inspiring to watch families gravitate toward their kitchens again and again this year, maybe more than ever before,” she told KILZ, where she has a brand partnership for her Magnolia Home paint line.

And she’s not afraid to explore color palettes that go beyond neutral in that important space. Magnolia’s senior designer Kristen Bufton revealed some of the best color combinations for kitchens which were all vetted and approved by Gaines herself, PureWow reported.

Even neutrals can be fun in a ‘Fixer Upper’ inspired kitchen

Most of Gaines’ designs feature lots of neutral tones, especially white kitchens that are bright, clean, and modern looking. But when it comes to color recommendations, the Magnolia team recommends branching out a little bit.

First, white doesn’t ever mean stark white. The first color combination Bufton recommends is a softer white with cream that’s infused with warmth and goes with everything. “White on white paint is super versatile because it acts as a backdrop for any décor style, including modern, industrial, traditional, etc.,” she said.

Another can’t-miss option is gray and white, which also counts as neutral. You’ll be channeling your inner Gaines when accessorizing with pops of color throughout so the whole kitchen isn’t so monochromatic.

All of Joanna’s favorite color combos have one aspect in common: They include white. In her four favorite color combinations, she pairs white with cream, bold blue, gray, and light blue or green.

The white and cream color combo offers a bit more versatility. You can take it in any direction–modern, industrial, traditional–and even switch it up as time goes on without having to repaint. If you’re looking for more of a moody vibe, Joanna suggests going with a bold blue hue. “We always keep the walls neutral when using a prominent darker cabinet color,” she said in a press email.

Another one of her ideal pairings is most often used in traditional kitchen styles: gray and white. “You can interchange these colors easily since they are both neutrals, although I would recommend avoiding a monochromatic scheme of all gray,” she said. “I encourage you to play with fun hardware, lighting, and rugs to add pops of color and texture throughout the space.”

If you’re more attracted to color, Joanna recommends going with a light blue or green and white color combo for its subtle and classic characteristics. “We love Emmie’s Room (JG-13), because it’s the perfect calming combination of green and blue and reminds me of the ocean,” she said.
