Amazon unveils its Rivian-made electric delivery van with cool interior

Amazon is unveiling today its electric delivery van made by Rivian, and we get to see its cool interior for the first time.

Last year, Rivian took a $700 million round of funding led by Amazon, and at the time, they were discussing opportunities to work together.

A few months later, we learned that one of those opportunities is building an electric delivery van for the online retail giant.

Amazon announced that it will buy 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian.

The project is one of the biggest of its kind and would represent one of the largest deployment of electric vehicles in the world.

It’s also an order likely worth over $4 billion for Rivian, which is massive for a startup.

The company has been dripping pieces of information and images of the electric delivery over the last few months.

Now, it is fully unveiling it, along with some features, but not the powertrain specs.

Amazon announced in a press release today:

“Just a year since announcing The Climate Pledge, Amazon is excited to reveal its first custom electric delivery vehicle, designed and built in partnership with Rivian.”

Interestingly, the vehicle is completely branded with Amazon branding — making it very much an Amazon vehicle instead of a Rivian vehicle.

It has also revealed a good look at the interior of the can for the first time:

RJ Scaringe, Rivian CEO, commented on the electric delivery vehicle:

“The vehicle we’ve developed with Amazon is not just electric. We prioritized safety and functionality to create a vehicle that’s optimized for package delivery. We thought through how drivers get in and out of the van, what the work space feels like and what the work flow is for delivering packages.”

Amazon released a list of features:

  • State-of-the-art sensor detection, a suite of highway and traffic assist technology, and a large windshield to enhance driver visibility.
  • Exterior cameras around the vehicle that are linked to a digital display inside the cabin, giving the driver a 360-degree view outside the vehicle.
  • Alexa integration for hands-free access to route information and the latest weather updates.
  • A strengthened door on the driver’s side for additional protection.
  • A “dancefloor” inside the driver’s cabin for easy movement inside the van.
  • Bright tail lights surrounding the rear of the vehicle to easily detect braking.
  • Three levels of shelving with a bulkhead door, which can easily be opened and closed for additional driver protection while on the road.

Amazon says that Rivian should start production of the electric delivery van next year and have 10,000 vans the vehicles on the road as early as 2022 and all 100,000 vehicles on the road by 2030.

This Electric Hypercar Interior Is Mostly Screens

Take what you see with a pinch of salt.

We don’t talk about Bulgaria that often. The little Balkan country is not a major player in the automotive landscape but we’ve seen a number of interesting projects coming from Bulgarian companies, including the Kinetik electric track toy and, of course, Vilner. There’s yet another firm from the country that’s making the headlines but we are yet to decide whether it’s for good or bad reasons.

Bulgaria’s Alieno brand was first announced approximately two years ago but so far it exists only on paper. Its first model is called the Arcanum and should become the most powerful vehicle we’ve ever seen with an output of up to 5,221 horsepower (3,893 kilowatts). So far though, we’ve only seen computer renderings of the model and there are new images now.

These new images preview the Arcanum’s interior. And boy, it’s out of this world with eight displays – maybe some of the screens are integrated into one module but we counted eight different areas displaying information. There are many things we don’t really understand, such as why there are so many words next to the gear lever, but we’ll leave it to the lead designer to explain his idea.

“This version of the interior of Alieno Arcanum is an extension of the car’s interior,” Encho Enchev says. “The overall theme is ultra-modernism with some Sci-Fi and futuristic accents. We want our customers to feel like they are in the cockpit of a spaceship, which the car resembles, given the technologies built into it. Our inspiration for the cockpit comes from the cockpits of many military fighters and science fiction movies such as Avatar Prometheus.”

Other highlights of the interior include heating and cooling cup holders, floating center console, electrically-adjustable cooled and heated bucket seats, memory “robotic” steering column, and others.

Alieno hasn’t announced its plans for the start of the Arcanum’s production. Previously, the company disclosed it’ll build examples of the electric hypercar only by customer orders with prices starting at €750,000 (about $878,000 at the current exchange rates) for the base model. The most expensive variants will cost €1.5 million ($1.755 million).

Lordstown shows off the interior of its Endurance electric pickup

Lordstown teased the interior of its upcoming Endurance pickup truck for the first time late September, and has confirmed it’s got 40,000 orders for the new truck.

The truck was unveiled in June, but the inside wasn’t shown off then.

The interior is clean but spartan, as you would expect in a fleet truck. Lordstown is aiming its vehicle sales mostly at companies that will buy a tonne at once, which means luxury and accessories come secondary to functionality, a mantra carried through the interior.

Replacing standard dials and switches is a horizontal screen that stretches over two-thirds of the dashboard’s width. From there you get all the information you need, including speed, range, and infotainment. There are a few analog dials near the centre console, presumably for the climate control, and a “gear” selector.

The vehicle will have a battery range of 250 miles (400 km) and offer 600 horsepower, thanks to its four hub-mounted motors.

The Endurance will have a lot of competition by the time deliveries start in late 2021. New companies such as Rivian and Bollinger are also getting ready to sell their EV trucks, while the big boys at Ford and Tesla should hit that same market in that time-frame, too. Where the Endurance will hopefully set itself apart is in its price, specifically since it’s being built for fleet use rather than strictly street use.

Lordstown Motors shows electric truck interior, confirms 40,000 pre-orders

Lordstown Motors on Wednesday showed the interior of its Endurance electric pickup truck for the first time. The company also confirmed that it had received 40,000 pre-orders for the Endurance, which is scheduled to start deliveries in late summer 2021.

The four interior photos Lordstown released indicate a no-frills affair, in line with the Endurance’s planned use as a work truck for commercial fleets. Instead of a conventional instrument cluster and infotainment screen, the Endurance has one horizontal screen running about half the length of the dashboard. A handful of analog controls are clustered below that, along with what appears to be a rotary gear selector.

No interior was shown at the official reveal in June, which turned out to be more of a political rally than a vehicle unveiling.

Key stats for the Endurance include 600 combined horsepower from four in-wheel hub motors and a 250-mile range.

Lordstown was formed to save the former General Motors factory in its namesake Ohio town. CEO Steve Burns previously ran another company, Workhorse, that developed electric delivery vans and a plug-in hybrid pickup truck called the W-15, which may have formed the basis for the all-electric Endurance.

Several other companies are looking to launch electric pickup trucks in the coming months. That includes newcomers Bollinger and Rivian, established automakers Ford and General Motors, and Tesla, which has never built a pickup truck before but has gotten plenty of attention with its unorthodox Cybertruck.

Most of these trucks are aimed at recreational use, but Ford just last week hinted at cost of ownership and fleet use, saying its F-150 Electric would be a “workhorse, not a showhorse.”

Lordstown Motors has just released some photos showing off the interior of its all-electric pickup truck, the Endurance (see gallery below). We had previously shared computer renderings of the inside of the cabin, and while those images were pretty accurate, there’s nothing like the real thing.

Like so many new vehicles, the screen is the main attraction here. We don’t have any numbers regarding its size or resolution, but it certainly looks suited to its mission of being a work-a-day vehicle for mainly commercial customers. All the info one needs for driving is right behind the steering wheel. Meanwhile, infotainment is located in front of the center console, where driver or passenger can reach and the various features and settings there.

It’s not a luxury interior – there is no rich Corinthian leather or stylistic baubles to enthuse about. There are, though, cupholders and a few knobs to adjust climate and other features. The gear selector appears to be a nice chunky dial placed forward on the armrest. 

Besides these interior shots, Lordstown also shared its current pre-order totals. When it originally launched this past June, only 14,000 had been spoken for. The company, however, may have stumbled across just the right segment to begin its automotive journey, since electric pickup trucks are the new black. Now, just three months later, that number has reached 40,000.

That 40,000 is nowhere near the 600,000 or so pre-orders for the Tesla Cybertruck, but we have to point out that the Cybertruck is a Tesla and, as such, draws upon the automaker’s experience in the industry, whereas Lordstown is a new startup.

Mercedes-Benz is committed to launching at least 10 electric cars by the end of 2022.

The first has been revealed as the EQC small SUV, and others in the pipeline that we know of include the EQA and EQB compact SUVs, electric commercials like the eVito and eSprinter vans, and an EQE sedan and EQE SUV.

We now have fresh spy shots of an EQS, a large electric sedan to sit alongside the latest S-Class. Mercedes will launch it in 2021, meaning we’ll likely see it arrive as a 2022 model.

The latest prototypes have lost a lot of the camouflage gear of earlier testers, revealing that the EQS is a liftback sedan akin to the Tesla Model S, high-end versions of which will be its main target. Other targets will include the new Lucid Air, an electric Jaguar XJ soming soon, and to a lesser extent the Porsche Taycan and related Audi E-Tron GT.

We also have some shots of the interior which features a large, portrait-style infotainment screen similar to the one in the new S-Class revealed earlier in September. Expect advanced voice activation, a head-up display with augmented reality graphics, and a digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics.

The car’s platform is a dedicated battery-electric design known as the MEA2 (Mercedes Electric Architecture), and the EQS is just the first application. MEA1 underpins the EQC and is based on a modified version of Mercedes’ MHA platform for SUVs with internal-combustion engines.

We can see that the EQS is a lot lower and sleeker than your typical Mercedes, including the CLS and AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. We can also see in some of the shots that the doors will be frameless and feature extendable handles. Mercedes previewed the design with the Vision EQS concept unveiled during September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show.

The MEA2 platform has enabled the designers to add a long wheelbase and short overhangs front and rear, and although the EQS looks to be similar in size to the mid-size CLS, the interior space should be on par or better than the full-size S-Class.

Given the rapid advancement in battery technology, Mercedes is keeping quiet on specs for its future electric cars. However, we know the EQS will come in several grades including one with a range of 435 miles when measured on the WLTP test cycle used overseas. This could still result in a range of over 400 miles when measured on the stricter EPA test cycle.

There’s also talk of a Mercedes-AMG version of the EQS packing performance similar to the S63 sledgehammer, as well as an ultra-luxury Maybach version.

GM Will Develop and Build Electric Motors In House

As part of its huge investment in EVs, General Motors will design and build a family of electric motors in-house. The company released a few details today on the three electric motors and five drive units, collectively known as Ultium Drive, that will move all of its future EVs. Everything from the next-generation Bolt, to the Cadillac Lyriq (pictured) above, to the new GMC Hummer. “GM has built transmissions for many notable automakers,” said GM EV boss Ken Morris in a statement. “Making motors, transmissions, driveline components and systems are among GM’s best-known competencies, and our manufacturing expertise is proving not only transferable but advantageous as we make the transition to EVs.” It would be cheaper and easier for GM to source motors and drive units from a supplier in the short term, but developing this technology in-house will lower cost in the long term.

Kia to Launch New EV Next Year

Yes, Kia offers an electric version of the Soul (though not in America), but soon, it’ll have an electric car riding on its own dedicated platform. Automotive News reports that Kia will launch a new EV on a dedicated platform next year. It’ll be the first of seven to be launched before 2027, and Kia hopes this new family of EVs will contribute to 25 percent of its global sales by the end of the decade.

Sebastien Bourdais to Return to IndyCar for 2021

French driver Sebastien Bourdais lost his IndyCar seat for 2020 when Dale Coyne Racing decided to hire rookie Alex Palou to pair with Santino Ferrucci. Seb ran sports cars for this year, but soon, he’ll make his IndyCar return. Racer reports that Bourdais will join AJ Foyt racing for the last three races of the 2020 season, in preparation for a full-time drive for next year. It’s great news for Bourdais, who isn’t quite ready to leave IndyCar. “I wasn’t ready to stop last year, and I’m still not,” he told Racer. “So clearly, so we’re going full steam ahead and try and get it done the best we can, so A.J. can enjoy being at the track again and have some good results.”
