Fauci says data on masks “speaks for itself” after “super spreader” White House event

Dr. Anthony Fauci said in an interview with CBS News that referring to a cure for COVID-19 may cause “confusion,” and he also weighed in on the health status of President Trump, who contracted the virus but is eager to return to in-person events as the presidential campaign reaches its closing weeks. Fauci also identified the White House ceremony for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett as a “super spreader” event.

Fauci, director of the National institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, was asked by CBS News’ Steven Portnoy about Mr. Trump’s penchant in recent media appearances for referring to the treatment he received for COVID-19 as a “cure.” Portnoy, CBS News’ White House radio correspondent, observed that until recently, most of the president’s aides have not worn masks, and he asked what people can learn about the efficacy of that strategy in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

“I think the — the data speaks for themselves,” Fauci said of mask-wearing. “We had a super-spreader event in the White House and it was in a situation where people were crowded together and were not wearing masks. So the data speak for themselves.”

A number of Trump aides and allies who attended the nomination ceremony for Judge Amy Coney Barrett in September have since tested positive for COVID-19.

And talk of a “cure” is inaccurate, Fauci suggested, since there currently is no cure for COVID-19 — only therapeutics.

“We don’t have any indication — I think you really have to depend on what you mean by a ‘cure,’ because that’s a word that leads to a lot of confusion,” Fauci said. “We have good treatments for people with advanced disease who are in the hospital.”

Turning to the president’s health, the infectious diseases expert did not think that the fact that the president was heard coughing during an interview with Fox News on Thursday night was cause for alarm. He walked through the COVID symptoms that could still be evident, even as Mr. Trump’s health may be improving.

“Most people, when they recover, they recover fine. In a linear fashion, they get better and better and better, which it appears that the president is doing,” Fauci said. “But having a bit of a lingering cough is not at all unusual as someone recovers. So I was not that taken aback by the clip that you just told me because when people do recover, they can have a lingering cough and maybe even a little shortness of breath for a while after they recover. Sometimes it takes a while to get everything back to normal.”

And a cough does not necessarily mean a person is still shedding the virus, although a person who coughs could still be shedding the virus, Fauci also said.

The president’s physician, Sean Conley, has said Mr. Trump may return to the public as soon as Saturday, although he has also said it won’t be until Monday that the president is fully in the clear. Fauci said

Amy Coney Barrett Rose Garden Event Was a WH COVID Superspreader, New Data Suggests

Shortly after judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination event at the White House’s Rose Garden, a number of those in attendance tested positive for COVID-19 and new data suggests that the event was a superspreader for the virus.

U.S. President Donald Trump announces 7th U.S. Circuit Court Judge Amy Coney Barrett as his nominee to the Supreme Court in the Rose Garden at the White House September 26, 2020 in Washington, DC.

According to data, that was released on Tableau Public by Peter James Walker, at least 37 cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed within 12 days after Barrett’s nomination event on September 26. In an email sent to Newsweek, Walker explained that the data is all crowd-sourced from public information, such as “tweets from verified reporters, news articles in trusted outlets, etc.”

Walker also noted that the site has an online tip line for anyone to forward new information, which is then verified with real articles before it is added to the tracker.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania were two of the biggest names to test positive for COVID-19 after the event, but several other positive tests were reported shortly after.

The data shows that at least 11 people that attended the September 26 event tested positive for COVID-19.

In addition to Trump and the first lady, the data show the others who tested positive after attending the event include Washington-based photojournalist Al Drago, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, California Pastor Greg Laurie, University of Notre Dame President John Jenkins, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany, former counselor to Trump Kellyanne Conway, Utah Senator Mike Lee, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis and a White House press corps journalist.

It is unclear how many of these people contracted the virus, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that signs and symptoms of the virus can appear within two to 14 days after being

Coles Kitchen Census data reveals why we love mum’s meals

Few things are better than mum’s home cooking and the kitchen is a place where traditions and family connections can be passed from one generation to the next.

And new Coles Kitchen Census data has found that traditional Aussie food values are just as relevant today as they were 100 years ago.

Mum’s recipes are still our favourites, with 42 per cent of the 5500 Coles customers polled saying childhood memories of food play an important role in how they cook today, while 50 per cent say it’s family members or close friends.

“Our research shows Australians cherish sharing a meal with friends and family and they want to support Aussie farmers, food producers and their local community,” Coles chief marketing officer Lisa Ronson said.

Tarni Witts cooks by taste and tradition, just like her mother and grandmother.

She uses treasured recipes from her childhood, including tuna casserole once served after cold nights of netball training and a crustless quiche by her mum Denise that was impossible to resist.

“Only she can get the eggs as fluffy as she does and the base so perfectly brown,” Ms Witts said.

“It’s a simple meal that mum has perfected and now I have customised it with the ingredients that my kids eat.”

Ms Witts said her boys Lohkie, 6, and Hudson, 5, have expressed much interest in the kitchen and will pick up the family recipes soon enough.

“It’s important to teach them the benefits of healthy and delicious home cooked meals,” she said.

“I love knowing that in years to come, my boys will be able to take on active roles as husbands that can cook for their families.”

The launch of the Coles Kitchen Census coincides with the company’s new Value the Australian Way campaign, which will feature a special appearance and music sung by Missy Higgins.

“It’s been a tough year for lots of Aussies and it’s great to see Coles backing great Indigenous Australian talents like Stephen Pigram, who wrote this tune and Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu with whom I dueted on the track,” she said

Celebrity chef and Coles ambassador Curtis Stone is also involved in the campaign.

“It’s wonderful to see that a significant proportion of Aussies value the same approach when shopping and cooking at home, with many of us favouring locally grown, responsibly sourced food,” he said.

House members call on FAA to ‘fully reveal the data’ proving the 737 Max is safe to fly

In their letter, Rep. Peter A. DeFazio (D-Ore.), chair of the House Transportation Committee, and Rep. Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) called on the FAA “to publicly release all documents related to design revisions or evaluations related to the aircraft’s safe return to service.”

Michael Stumo, whose daughter Samya was killed on the Ethiopian Airlines flight that crashed on March 10, 2019, had made a similar request Wednesday and Dickson said at a news conference that he faced limits in revealing such technical details.

“We’re providing everything we can, within the law. Much of the data, I believe, that’s being asked for is proprietary,” Dickson said Wednesday.

But DeFazio and Larsen pressed the issue again Thursday “in the strongest possible terms.” Both Boeing and the FAA had mistakenly found the flawed flight control feature that led to the crashes “to be compliant” with federal safety standards, according to their letter, “despite the fact that the aircraft was actually unsafe.”

“To assure the flying public that Boeing’s fixes to the MAX have rendered the plane safe to once again carry passengers, the FAA will need to do more than merely certify that the plane is now compliant,” they wrote.

They said Dickson should release, among other documentation, “system safety assessments, related analysis, assumptions about pilot response times and key test data concerning the safety of the aircraft.” They said the FAA “should fully reveal the data any determination to unground the MAX has been based upon.”

In a statement, the FAA declined to say whether it would release the requested data or call on Boeing to release such information itself.

“We will respond directly to the members,” the statement said.

Boeing declined to address whether it supports the release of the information or would agree to waive any claim that the requested documentation may be proprietary.

White House reportedly pushed CDC hard to fall in line on sending kids to school, sought alternate safety data

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention began working in early summer on guidance for sending children back to school, and the White House then “spent weeks trying to press public health professionals to fall in line with President Trump’s election-year agenda of pushing to reopen schools and the economy as quickly as possible,” The New York Times reported Monday night, citing documents and interviews with current and former government officials.

This “strikingly political intervention in one of the most sensitive public health debates of the pandemic” included searching for “alternate data” that suggested children were at little or no risk from the coronavirus, the Times reports, and trying to swap in guidance from a little-known Health and Human Services Department agency, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

SAMHSA was focused on the emotional and mental health toll remote school could have on children, but CDC scientists found multiple problems with the agency’s assertion that COVID-19 posed a low health and transmission risk for children. That’s the language the White House was most interested in, though, and throughout the summer the CDC won some battles and lost others trying to keep it out of public guidance, the Times documents.

Olivia Troye, one of Vice President Mike Pence’s envoys on the White House coronavirus task force until leaving the administration in July, told the Times she regrets being “complicit” in the effort to pressure the CDC to make children look safer than the data supported. She said when she tried to shield the CDC, Pence’s chief of staff, Marc Short, charged “more junior staff” to “develop charts” for White House briefings.

In early July, several prominent medical groups, including the American Association of Pediatrics, advised sending kids back to school with stringent safety measures, in part because the data at the time suggested lower risk for kids. “More recently, data compiled by the academy from recent months shows that hospitalizations and deaths from the coronavirus have increased at a faster rate in children and teenagers than among the general public,” the Times reports.
