Philabundance Opens Community Kitchen Offering Adults Culinary Training and Life Skills

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Governor Tom Wolf and First Lady Frances Wolf helped cut the ribbon on a brand new Philabundance Community Kitchen in North Philadelphia on Tuesday.

PCK is a 16-week culinary training and life skills program providing opportunities to adults with little to no income who need not just a job, but a second chance at life.

PCK promotes the self-sufficiency of its students by preparing them for and connecting them to work in the food service industry and allows them to give back by preparing meals for those in need.

“In a year that has contained a great deal of hardship, it is wonderful to have the opportunity to celebrate a new beginning,” said Governor Wolf. “Nothing could be more appropriate than celebrating with the Philabundance community. Philabundance has remained a steadfast partner in my administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Pennsylvanian has access to plentiful, nutritious food.”

The 20,000 square foot facility includes classrooms for life skills education and a commercial kitchen where participants will learn valuable culinary arts skills.

Since 2000, PCK has graduated more than 920 students. This is PCK’s first location in its 20-year history that is not shared with another organization or company.

PCK also has its own catering program that helps fund programming, and they provide food to homeless shelters around the city.

“It’s a culinary arts workforce development program that helps teach culinary arts and life skills and then helps employ folks that may have had trouble getting employment in the past,” said Melanie Cataldi, Philabundance Chief Impact Officer. “And we follow them for a minimum of two years to make sure they have whatever they need to stay employed. So it’s really a transformational program.”

Inn at Hastings Park Unveils Whispering Angel Culinary Garden

LEXINGTON, Mass., Sept. 22, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — The Inn at Hastings Park, a luxury and historic member of Ocean House Management (OHM) Collection, announces the launch of the Whispering Angel Culinary Garden this month, in partnership with the world’s most celebrated rosé.

The Inn at Hastings Park has reopened with renewed purpose as an immersive food and wine destination. Centered around a large, wood farm table and rustic seating with blush accents, the exclusive culinary garden is enclosed by a wood and wire fence with sheltering trees just beyond—creating a magical, natural setting with twinkling lights strung above. During outdoor cooking classes, guests interact with beds of herbs, root vegetables, and edible flowers, depending on the season. Providing an element of glamour, Whispering Angel is served in a specially curated selection of crystal wine glasses – because everything tastes better in Baccarat.

Owner Trisha Pérez Kennealy will share her passion for teaching others how to cook by assuming a new role as Culinary Educator, “We’re pleased to introduce programs that encourage a sense of community and human connection. The Culinary Garden is a gathering place for families, friends and colleagues, accommodating up to 12 people for each seating. Continuing the Inn’s commitment to community, the intimate space will also be used for fundraising events with local organizations. Ms. Pérez Kennealy will host interactive cooking lessons and meals, featuring dishes inspired by Whispering Angel. The seasonal menu includes Corn Chowder and Brussels Sprouts Grilled Cheese, with Peach Spoon Cake dessert, and dinner specials such as Sun-Dried Tomato and Eggplant Pizzettes, and Baby Lamb Chops with Roasted Fingerling Potatoes.

Ms. Pérez Kennealy will also offer experiential cooking weekends, interactive classes as well as private virtual lessons – all from the Inn’s beautifully decorated living room. The Inn’s signature restaurant Town Meeting Bistro is now reopened to serve lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch with select dishes designed to be paired with Whispering Angel.

Foundation Kitchen’s breakthrough culinary concept is coming to Charlestown in 2021

Here at Time Out Boston, we’ve been wondering lately: What will our city look like in the future? Also, what should our city look like in the future?

Given its sky-high real estate prices and myriad challenges, Boston has become one of the toughest cities in the USA for business owners, particularly those running restaurants, cafes and bars. One local company, Foundation Kitchen, is planning on opening in Charlestown in early 2021, bringing with it a new approach to doing business.

As a shared culinary workspace, Foundation Kitchen’s main focus is to unite and promote other small food and beverage companies, something that is much needed during these challenging times. Foundation Kitchen’s co-founders, the husband and wife team of Ciaran Nagle and Tara Novak, have signed a 5,723 square-foot lease to open a new culinary production and dining destination at The Graphic Lofts in Charlestown. Located directly across the street from the MBTA’s Sullivan Square Station (Orange Line), the space will be open to the public seven days a week, offering a café, wine bar and food stalls, plus cooking classes, special events and culinary pop-ups.

“Given this shift and increased demand for more healthy, local grab-and-go dining options, takeout and delivery have skyrocketed in popularity, as customers seek creative alternatives to cooking at home night after night,” said Ciaran Nagle in a statement.

“We presently have one boutique shared commercial kitchen located in Union Square, Somerville, and we’re excited about this new location opening in Charlestown,” added Tara Novak. “This shared kitchen concept is licensed for shared-use food production, and multiple other businesses may operate from our new kitchen at The Graphic. All member companies working out of our space have their own licenses, insurance, and certification, and either work from their own designated studio space or from their own pre-scheduled space within the shared kitchen”

Creative Team Announced For Experimental Bitch's Culinary Audio Play + Food Box: IN THE KITCHEN

The complete creative team has been announced for interactive audio play In the Kitchen. Reservations for In the Kitchen’s original recipe box and accompanying audio play will go on sale to the public on September 23rd. Experimental Bitch Presents (EBP) will host a live launch event featuring musical performance by Anat Halevy Hochberg and cooking demonstration by Annabel Rabiyah of The Awafi Kitchen on October 8th.

In the Kitchen is created and performed by Hannah Aliza Goldman. Goldman is joined by director Coral Cohen (Between the Threads: Jewish Women Project), who returns to the team after directing the 2019 workshop production at Access Theater. The devising duo adapt In the Kitchen for an interactive at-home experience.

Musician Anat Halevy Hochberg will serve as composer, adapting traditional Mizrahi Jewish songs with sound design by Carsen Joenk. Israeli music producer, Enat Ventura, returns to the project as audio engineer.

As previously reported, The Awafi Kitchen helmed by culinary artist, Annabel Rabiyah, will curate the recipe and ingredients of the In the Kitchen box. Rabiyah will also serve as art director.

Tatiana Baccari and Wednesday Derrico of Experimental Bitch produce, with stage management by EBP Resident Stage Manager, Rachel April.

Listeners will be led by Ms. Goldman through a tapestry of stories examining the intersections of Judaism and Arab culture, feminism, and culinary heritage, while they prepare Ba’aba Beh Tamur, a delicious Iraqi cookie, in the comfort of their homes. Reservations will include the recipe, food box and original audio play, which are integrated to guide the listener through the cooking process in their home.
