Brockton firefighters on Tuesday morning rescued a woman and three children from the third floor of a home that caught fire, officials said.

Via Twitter around 9:30 a.m., Brockton firefighters confirmed the two-alarm blaze at 574 Warren Ave., a three-story wood frame residence.

Minutes later, fire officials tweeted that rescues were “being made from the third floor.”

“Four people rescued over ladders, all companies working,” the department tweeted in another follow-up message.

Brockton Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Galligan said the woman and three children who were rescued were evaluated by EMS at the scene and released. One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a minor hand injury, he said.

The fire started in the basement and the woman and three children were unable to get out on their own, he said.

“The stairways and the hallways were full of smoke,” Galligan said in a telephone interview.

The woman and children were rescued from a third floor window. Firefighters used a ground ladder to take two of them out and a tower ladder to rescue the other two, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Galligan said.

“Right now we believe it was accidental,” he said.

Spice Kitchen’s chef Abudu hosts fundraiser Yemeni children

Meals center on our culture, our ideas of home and family, they open up the community to a broader table. Sitting down to eat together can be powerful. Of all the questions that come up when opening a food business, though, Abudu of Kafé Mamai acknowledges that ’why’ is the most complex. For Abudu this may be especially true. While he loves to share his “culture and experience,” he is also passionate about using his small business to support others in his local community and around the globe. In August, Abudu worked to organize a fundraiser in support of Yemeni children.

Abudu, like several others who are aware of the Yemeni crisis, has felt called to action. Yemen lies at the center of concurrent crises. While war threatens the lives of citizens, cholera and the coronavirus remain critical concerns as well. Two-thirds of the population are at risk of starvation. The risk of famine and hunger in particular spurred Abudu to begin raising money for Yemeni children to support efforts to increase access to food.

“I come from a culture where it doesn’t matter where you’re from,” Abudu shares. “You always show hospitality. Even if you’re not eating, if someone comes here as a guest, you feed them.” In this case, Abudu is feeding people locally in order to feed families halfway across the globe.

Abudu originally lived in Lamu, an island off the coast of Kenya, significant in Swahili culture and history and noted for its distinct architecture. He has lived in the states since 2001 and moved to Utah in 2016, where he quickly joined the Spice Kitchen Incubator program. He officially launched his food truck in 2019.

“I like that his cuisine highlights his experience and travels,” Kate Idzorek, the Spice Kitchen Incubator program manager, says of the Afro-Caribbean influenced business. Abudu works to constantly improve Kafé Mamai, but he also dedicates time to the well-being of other entrepreneurs by checking in on them. “He’s a shining star,” Kate says. “He advocates for himself and others.”

When Abudu first pitched the fundraiser last year, he started it as part of Spice To-Go, a hot meal pick-up service facilitated by Spice Kitchen Incubator. The staff at Spice Kitchen were eager to support his idea. This year, he wanted to do more: “Because [coronavirus] has taken over everything else, we don’t talk about things like Yemen,” he says. “It’s not that these things don’t happen [in the U.S.], too,” he explains, talking about hardship experienced in the U.S., like homelessness and hunger. “But it’s different. Worst comes to worst, we have resources.”

All of the profits that Abudu earned during the fundraiser went towards the humanitarian crisis in Yemen. To further the reach of the fundraiser, he organized other food truck

For over 45 years, the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse has been one of the country’s most illustrious showcases of design—but also an important fundraiser for the Bronx-based Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Over the past few decades, luminaries including Mario Buatta, Bunny Williams, Sheila Bridges, and more have outfitted a townhouse in New York City, which visitors tour with proceeds going to the clubhouse in support of the programming it offers to New York City kids. This year, while the New York showhouse was sadly cancelled due to COVID, the event moved to Dallas, where this week, the first ever Kips Bay Dallas showhouse opened to the public.

In light of the ongoing pandemic and subsequent social distancing guidelines and travel restrictions, this year, the Dallas showhouse will be the first ever to offer virtual tours—meaning that, no matter where you are, you can “visit” the 12,000 square foot home in Dallas’s Preston Hollow and see rooms by 27 designers in 3D. But even better, the $20 virtual ticket will provide much needed funding not only to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, but to Dallas-based Dwell with Dignity, an organization providing transitional housing to formerly homeless, incarcerated, or abused women and families (read more about Dwell with Dignity here).

“Each room of the house will be showcased along with a two minute narration of the space by each designer,” explains Jean Liu, who is an avid supporter of Dwell with Dignity and a vice-chair of the house along with Chad Dorsey and chairs Jan Showers, Christopher Peacock, and Veranda’s Steele Marcoux.

On the tour, you’ll be treated to delightfully inventive rooms by the likes of Mark Sikes, Michelle Nussbaumer, Lauren Rottet (whose entry shown above, was inspired by the nearby botanical garden), Traci Zeller, and many more—all decorated in just a few short weeks, and in the midst of a pandemic, no less!

Woman driver is shot and two children were injured when SUV hits house, KC police say

Kansas City police are investigating a woman who was shot and then slammed the SUV she was driving into a house, injuring two child passengers.

The shooting was reported just after 5:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Askew Avenue. It stemmed from an incident that happened moments earlier at a liquor store at 57th Street and Swope Parkway, police spokesman, Sgt. Jacob Becchina said in an email.

Several shots were fired as the woman drove away. The vehicle struck a house on Askew Avenue and caused minor damage to the residence. The woman and the two children were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.

It was initially unclear if the woman’s injuries were the result of being shot or caused when the SUV struck the house. Medical crews determined the woman had been shot. She is listed in stable condition, Becchina said.

The two children had minor injuries.

Michelle Butler said she was driving near 57th Street and Bales Avenue when she heard several gunshots.

“I had just missed that vehicle running over the curve and then it wound up hitting this house,” Butler said. “And it’s sad. I don’t know who got hurt. If it was over a fender-bender, then it shouldn’t gotten that deep.”

On Friday, details of what prompted the shooting remained under investigation. Police did not say if any arrests had been made.

Anyone with information should call the Tips Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

What is the Ideal Age of Children to Appreciate a Toy Kitchen?

As a parent, I am quite fond of toys that encourage imaginary play. It's believed to enthuse children and help cultivate their ingenuity and inventive juices. While I've been guilty of using the TV as a babysitter before just as many other parents have, it's important to understand the significance of keeping our children's minds challenged and engaged when ever possible. One favorite toy that helps to augment a child's artistic and innovative side is a play kitchen. But is there an age that is most appropriate for a child to begin exploring the idea of cooking and / or is there such an age where the child will no longer recognize the value of a play kitchen?

As with anything there is never a hard and fast rule when it comes to the development of our children. Yet, it was a question I wanted to address because I often come across such an inquiry on various forums and blogs. Most often people are wondering if their child might be too young to play with a toy kitchen but on occasion, people ask if their child may be too old to appreciate such a gift.

So you may be asking, what is the best age for play kitchens and what are the reasons behind that answer? It can be connected that the ideal age to fully utilize and appreciate a toy kitchen is between two and half and 5 and half years old. Acquiring a play kitchen for your child under the age of two is certainly a prerogative but don't anticipate there to be much awareness until they are closer to two and a half. Imaginary play is a concept that is developed in children over the age of two and children younger than that are just not ready cognitively to grasp this idea of pretend play. Although they may be captivated by all the bells and whistles, literally, they won't connect to the imaginative power of a play kitchen until they are a bit older.

Ok, but what about the kids that are over the age of five; would they have an attraction to such a toy? At this age, expect them to be more allured by the idea of cooking with real food. They are ready to experiment using genuine ingredients while creating their own master piece. In conclusion, it seems to logical that the ideal ages to truly appreciate a play kitchen and benefit from imaginary play is between the ages of two and five; a limited window maybe but a great instrument none the less.

As I said, all children are diverse and some may really take pleasure in a toy kitchen outside of the ages I listed but for the most part, I think, as a parent you will be more satisfied with your purchase if you stay with in these guidelines.
