John Lennon’s sister Julia remembers late singer on his 80th birthday

John Lennon’s sister has opened up about growing up with the late singer in Liverpool, revealing their mother would rehearse with the Beatles as teens in the kitchen.

Julia Baird, 73, who continues to live in Liverpool, appeared on This Morning today to mark what would have been the music legend’s 80th birthday , and told of the ‘close knit’ family unit in which she and John grew up.

She told how their mother, who was also called Julia, always ‘encouraged’ the singer’s dreams, despite other parents they knew deterring their children from pursuing a career in music.

John’s sister told how their mum would play the ‘washboard and the banjo’ as her son practised in their Springwood home, and that her brother and pal Paul McCartney had a ‘determination’ that other young musicians didn’t.

‘We didn’t know any differently,’ said Julia. ‘John was our brother, we were always together. It was a very close knit family for the youngsters.’

When asked whether she always knew that John was special, she admitted that having a brother in a band was nothing special in their local community.

‘Everyone had a brother that was in a group,’ she told. ‘But they all dropped off as they got to 15, their parents got them out, [they] went to university, they all wanted to do different things. But John and Paul had a determination the others never had.’

Speaking of her late mother she went on: ‘In our kitchen in Springwood in Liverpool, is where our mother not just encouraged and said you can have the kitchen to rehearse, it but joined in.

‘She played the washboard and the banjo, my mother wanted to be in the group herself I think.’

Julia described her brother as ‘ a bit bossy’ but reminisced about memories of trips to the cinema and John helping her with school work.

She said: ‘He’s six and a half years older than me, very much the older brother – a bit boss. He played with us, drew with us, practised our time tables with us, took us to the cinema to see Elvis and then the little picture and then Elvis again.’

John’s family always held a place in his heart, with Julia revealing he picked them out of the crowd ahead of the Liverpool premiere

‘Birthday Girl’ Desperate for the Bathroom Leads Police on High Speed Chase

When you gotta go, you gotta go. A woman in Enid, Oklahoma led police on a high speed chase on her 28th birthday, all because she really needed to get home in time to go to the bathroom.

Local outlet KFOR said that Emily Owings was pulled over for a pretty standard traffic stop: she wasn’t wearing her seatbelt. Unfortunately, the only ID she had on her was her medical marijuana card. When police searched for the driver, they found out that her driver’s license had been suspended. According to an Enid Police Department Facebook post, the whole ordeal began at about 9 a.m. Tuesday morning.

In police footage shared by KFOR, an officer informs Owings that her license is suspended. When she asks why, the officer says that he doesn’t know but was “waiting to see if [she] had warrants through Woods County.”

Owings tried to tell the officer exactly why she wanted to go so quickly. “I have to poop so bad,” she said. After the officer dismissed her need to go, she said that it was her birthday. “It’s my birthday,” she said. When the officer asked what she’d say, she reiterated, “It’s my f**king birthday, man.”

In another clip, Owings starts crying and asking why he won’t let her go. The officer said it wasn’t possible, because her license was supended. “I’m sorry, I didn’t know,” she said. “I won’t drive no more, but can I please go home and go poop?”

KFOR reported that the woman did have a warrant out for her arrest in Woods County, allegedly for a fight with an officer. Upon telling her that officers were on their way to get her, she responded, “No, they’re not. F**k you guys,” and sped off.

In the police department Facebook post, it wrote that the chase took place at speeds topping 70 miles per hour in a 30 MPH speed zone.

After she was apprehended, the woman was seemingly still more concerned about her bowels than the fact that her charges were going to be upgraded. “Can I poop in your car, man?” She asked as the officers put her in the back of the car.

Officers found a glass meth pipe with burnt residue during a search of Owings’ vehicle. The police said she was booked with “eluding, reckless driving, driving under suspension, no seat belt, no insurance and possession of drug paraphernalia.”

At the end of its Facebook post, the department said it knows that we all have bathroom emergencies, but it’s still not worth the risks that Owings took. “Everybody poops, we know, but that’s no reason to commit a felony and put in danger the lives of officers, other motorists and pedestrians in the area. Also, be sure to buckle up. Seat belts save lives,” the post said.

The Enid Police Department public information officer did not respond to Newsweek’s emailed request for comment.

BIRTHDAY OF THE DAY: Sandeep Prasanna, subcommittee director for intelligence and counterterrorism on the House Homeland Security Committee

How/where are you celebrating your birthday and with whom? “I had a fun, low-key weekend — Saturday was spent jumping around outdoor distilleries and breweries in Northeast D.C., and ended with takeout from one of our favorite spots, Maketto. Today is the first day of session after August recess, so I’ll be teleworking at home with my partner, Ryan, and our cats, Idli and Chutney, squeezing in a few video calls with family and friends throughout the day. Tonight, I’m actually teaching my first evening class of the semester at Georgetown Law, so it’ll be a late night in the office, aka our dining table.”

How did you get your start in politics? “Like many fledgling lawyers looking for work on Capitol Hill, I was stuck in job hunt purgatory for a long time — graduate degree but no Hill experience, underqualified for counsel positions but passed over for entry-level positions. I got my start in the Senate when Sen. [Richard] Blumenthal and his staff took a chance on me, offering me a spot on his Judiciary team as a legislative correspondent. It wasn’t easy balancing law school debt on a junior staffer salary, but I took the opportunity and ran with it. It felt fulfilling to work on a portfolio I cared deeply about, learning from some of the best in the business.”

What’s an interesting book/article you’re reading during coronavirus social distancing? And why? “I recently finished ‘Survival of the Friendliest: Understanding Our Origins and Rediscovering Our Common Humanity,’ written by Duke scientists Brian Hare (my thesis adviser!) and Vanessa Woods. They walk us through the research that shows that humans may often be cruel to one another, but we’re also uniquely cooperative — and that’s what has made us successful as a species. Survival of the friendliest. It’s a science-based call to action for us to reimagine and expand who ‘belongs’ in our communities in order to harness the better angels that are built into our very DNA. I’m a little biased, but we need this book now more than ever.”

Son sells birthday whiskey collection worth over $53G to buy his first house

Saving up to a buy a house can feel like a daunting task, but one young man in England found a unique way to do it. It turns out, his father’s idea to invest in whiskey paid off, literally.

Matthew Robson would receive a bottle of Macallan single malt as a birthday gift from his dad, the BBC reports. Over 28 years, Robson’s father reportedly spent over $6,000 on the whiskey.

Which is probably money well spent, because Robson reportedly has a collection worth $53,000, which he plans on turning into a down payment on his first house.

Robson told the BBC, “Each year I received it as a birthday present. I thought it was quite a quirky little present as I was slightly too young to start drinking. But I was under strict instructions, never, never to open them and I tried my hardest and succeeded and they’re all intact.”

Robson’s father explained, “I thought it would be interesting if I bought one every year and he’d end up with 18 bottles of 18-year-old whiskey for his 18th birthday. It wasn’t the only present he got from us. It was just meant to be a unique present but it was a little bit of luck that we kept it going.”

The value of Macallan has reportedly risen over the last five to 10 years, making Robson’s collection significantly more valuable. He’s working with a whiskey broker to sell it and says that there’s already a lot of interest from buyers in New York and Asia.
