RV Interior Education

I told my wife that as a late Christmas gift, and an early "get ready for camping season" gift, she could get whatever she wanted to accessorize and update the interior of our RV from Camping World. It did not take long before she was perusing the http://www.CampingWorld.com website in search of the products she wanted for her RV interior makeover.

Soon afterwards, the packages began arriving at our doorstep. In all of her excitement, she had me sit down so she could show me all of the new interior treatments and accessories. I must say that from a man's perspective I was not all that impressed at first, when she pulled out the new sheets, towels, candles, placemats, and what looked to be some kind of a sleeping bag. But upon closer examination and after listening to her explanation about each of these new interior items, I was quite impressed.

For starters, she ordered a 600 thread count sheet set for our queen size RV bed. Now if you know anything about RV beds you know that it is almost impossible to find sheets to fit. Not only are these premium sheets sized especially for RV beds, but the designer colors coordinate with any RV bedroom, and until you try them you can't imagine how soft this Egyptian-combed cotton really is.

Next, she pulled some bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths out of a box. Now I always thought a bath towel, was a bath towel, was a bath towel. Boy, was I ever wrong. The first thing she showed me was how big (27 "X 48") and thick the new RV bath towels were. Next, she pointed out how the neutral beige color matched our RV bathroom. But what really sold her on the towels was that they feature an antimicrobial treatment that keeps them fresh. What does antimicrobial mean? Well, basically it means that the towels and wash cloths need no bleach to stay sanitary and fresh, and the treatment lasts up to 50 washings.

Then she moved on to the new placemats and candles. I must say that not only are the placemats good looking but they're reversible, they coordinate with the kitchen and they will help protect the table. The neat thing about the candles is that they are flameless, color-changing, scented candles. Yes, I said flameless. They're actual wax candles with real scents that are lit by a long-life LED (light emitting diode). No open flame means they're safe to use in the RV, and you can select to have the color change every ten seconds or use the hold feature. Very neat!

Last (and possibly my favorite part of her interior makeover) was the thing that looked like a sleeping bag. It is actually called a TravasakĀ® Sleep System, and it is an all-in-one, year-round RV bedding system that incorporates two comforters, winter and summer, that are zipped together on three sides. You put the Winter side on top during colder weather …

How To Get Rid Of Centipedes In The House Effectively

In order to get rid of centipedes in the house it is necessary to follow a 2 step process that involves humidity and food supply. Centipedes are invertebrates with an exoskeleton, multiple pairs of legs and inhabit most parts of the world. There are about 3000 known species of centipedes with legs ranging from 15 to over 300.

However adaptable they may be, they always need a moist environment to survive because they lack the waxy protective cuticle of insects or spiders. Hence their preference for rocks, piles of leaves or vegetation, wood and so on. At spring time they come out for reproduction and at fall they are lured into houses seeking warmth and food. Because of their need for moist, they are usually fund in parts of the house that mimic their natural environment like basements, kitchen basins, washing machines or laundry rooms.

The common house centipede is called Scutigera Coleoptrata and like all centipedes is a predator. The house centipede is 1 to 2 inches long and has 15 pairs of legs developed in several molts from an original set of just 4 legs when newly hatched. Other larger centipedes like the tropical Scolopendromorpha are born directly with 21 pairs of shorter legs and flexible segments, can reach gigantic size up to 12 inches (30 cm) and feed on mice, lizards, frogs and even tarantulas, while the house centipede has a rigid segmented body with long and fast legs and feeds on other house pests. Unlike other species of centipedes, the house centipede has good eye sight but catches its prey with the aid of antennae too.

Typical house centipede preys include ants, termites, bed bugs, spiders and cockroach nymphs as well as opportunistic kitchen left overs. They hunt at night and this is the time they are usually sighted. Over all the house centipede provides a good service in that it naturally preys on other unwanted house pests that are objectively far more hazardous than the centipede itself. Just think of the many germs and illnesses transmitted by roaches, fleas (including the historic bubonic plague through rat fleas), or blood feeding bed bugs. Centipedes are not after humans nor are they a health hazard like other pests, however there are 2 reasons why home owners want to get rid of centipedes in the house the moment they see one of them.

One reason is that their presence may be the tell tale sign that there is another infestation on which the centipede feed on. The other reason is just their appearance. Centipedes are quite revolting. Couple this with their speed and manoeuvrability and you have a horror movie like creature alive, right in the middle of your room. Unfortunately, as long as centipedes have no reason to leave, they will stay and multiply. So the solution to eliminating them is to give them a reason to leave.

How to get rid of centipedes in the house then? Tidy up the clutter in the bathroom, kitchen, basement …

Bathroom Remodeling – How to Install a Standing Shower Stall

Achieving a successful installation when it comes to a shower stall is not as difficult as you may think. Given your ability to follow instructions and a reasonable amount of construction knowledge it can be quite rewarding in the end. With quality renovation professionals becoming more and more illusive and the investment at times exceeding your budgeted amount DIY is on the rise.

First you will need to temporarily shut off the water to the shower unit, don't worry once the plumbing is capped off you can turn it back on. Now remove the shower stall as it is now. Depending on whether or not you have fiberglass unit, cast iron tub, or existing tile stall your demo method will differ.

Now that demo is complete determine where you want your new shower valves and fixtures to go, and rough these now. Most of the time when a tub has been removed you will need to install the drain to the center of your new stall opening, Also common today are shower niches or soap dishes, placement and framing of these along with any type "knee or pony walls "is done now as well,

Pre-sloping of the slab with a form-able mud material will be installed now. Marking on the slab or sub-floor the final depth of the new shower stall will give you a stopping point for your pre-slope. ext install the shower pan liner attaching it to the drain and running it up the wall above the height of your seat or around 20 inches. Next form your curb that the shower door will set on to a desirable height, usually 5 inches, with a 2×6 pulling the pan up between the form boards and pouring on each side with concrete encapsulating the pan.

Installation of duroc material or a concrete based backer board and mesh taping the joints will be done now. Once this is done use a waterproof paint or membrane and cover the entire shower stall except the floor. When dry packing the floor on top of the shower pan is very important to keep at least 1/4 inch per 3 foot fall to the drain this will ensure the water will drain properly.

After completing this step you are now ready to begin the installation of your shower floor tile material. Once this is dry the wall tile installation can begin. After the tile installation is completed you will need to clean all the tile and grout lines before grouting begins.

Finally install your new shower fixtures and shower door to begin reaping the benefits of your hard labor ..

The Principles of Design for Kitchens and Bathrooms

Good design is defined as unity of design and a timeless look. But to achieve unity and an evergreen look one must give consideration to all the principles of design. Remodeling your kitchen and bathroom is so much more than selecting fixtures and painting the walls. A good remodel will have a well thought out design concept that begins with the principles of design as its foundation.

The principles are balance, rhythm, emphasis/focal point, scale, proportion, and harmony/unity. In order to have a better understanding of these concepts we will look at each at it pertains to bathroom remodel planning and kitchen planning.

Let’s start with balance which is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, textures and space. On a recent powder room design a client requested tile to be installed above the vanity all the way up the wall and considered tiling the whole wall not just above the vanity. The powder room being very small could only visually support a small amount of tile without making the space feel bulky or heavy. Based on the principle of balance we opted for less is more and decided not to do the whole wall. Thought was also given to the light pendants we chose, again wanting to keep the room balanced we chose streamline lights that had very little bulk and clear glass to keep the balance of the space feeling light. These decisions helped the design of this small room feel spacious even with the lack of square footage.

Moving onto rhythm. The easiest way to create rhythm within a space is to repeat elements of design which can include line, shape, texture, color, pattern and light. In a recent bathroom project we used floral like mosaic in the shower, on the floor and on an accent wall. We repeated the pattern in several areas over mute color tile to give the bathroom rhythm. In a recent kitchen we used straight lines on the cabinet doors, hardware, light fixtures and furniture to create rhythm and flow. The idea is to keep the eye moving in a natural way that makes one feel relaxed and comfortable in the space and never overwhelmed.

Emphasis/focal point is one of my favorite principles of design to work with. Here the idea is to showcase a portion of the design and hold the viewer’s attention. Often referred to as the “wow” factor one can be as creative as they want as long as thought is given to the rest of the design principles. One of my favorite design projects was a master bathroom that was designed in all marble. The entire bathroom was jaw dropping so creating a focal point meant we had to get creative. The solution was building a false wall to house a fireplace and wall to wall niche tiled in herringbone which was accented with sun from a skylight. Though the entire space was breathtaking everyone who entered held their attention to the false wall we created. …

Save Bathroom Storage Space With Bathroom Linen Cabinets

Bathroom linen cabinets are an excellent way to add elegance and serve as an ideal storage option to your lavatory. Cabinets are not only functional, but they are an attractive way to show off your bathroom while keeping your daily necessities in an accessible and convenient way.

These cabinets are naturally very simple and sleek looking in design. In choosing the right storage cabinet, it should suit the design of the bathroom to make to complement the entire look of the room.

There are corner cabinets, those with glass doors and drawers, stand up cabinets, as well as wall types. You may want to consider the storage with decorative shelves for holding candles or baskets so that you can add some decor to your bathroom at the same time.

Wall Mounted Bathroom Linen Cabinet

A wall mounted type of storage is perfect for people without a lot of space, but need just a little something to hold their linens or even their hairdryers, and other personal belongings to keep them out of reach of children.

This type of cabinet becomes part of the room so that it looks natural and updated as opposed to the previously bare bathrooms that people used for long time.

Since it is well recognized that many bathrooms do not have huge amounts of free space, cabinets are often designed to be tall and thin, while taking up very little space.

One of the principal benefits of having tall narrow cabinets is that your bathroom will be prearranged and you will know how to store new items.

Modern Style Bathroom Linen Cabinet

If you have a modern style restroom, it is good to choose a nice linen bedding to match with your cabinet as well as the look of your bathroom. This is especially helpful if the rest of your house have a modern look inside and out.

If your bathroom does not have enough space, you can choose from many differently sized cabinets. It is essential that you will feel convenient with your cabinet as this may help you store more of your properties. Keep whatever organized and neat inside your linen cabinets and employ the majority of the area you have.

Hiring a Contractor For Your Bathroom Remodel

The process of hiring a professional contractor to tackle your bathroom renovations can make your head spin pretty quick.

First, there are many bath renovation companies out there. Look under ‘General Contractors’ or ‘Bathroom Remodeling’ in the phone book and you will see what we mean…there are hundreds of bathroom remodelers and general contractors in each area. On top of that, there are hundreds of other great contractors that remodel bathrooms but are not in the phone book.

Second, it is pretty easy to go around calling yourself a professional bathroom remodeling pro. People don’t necessarily need an office or a lot of fancy equipment or tools to start a business. Therefore, individuals that have done some repairs on a few houses or rooms can try to trick you into believing they are a highly skilled and experienced bathroom remodeling professional. If they have a truck, a tool belt, and a business card they could fool a lot of people!

Finally, there are many different types of contractors that remodel bathrooms. There are handymen, general contractors, builders, construction companies, and companies that specialize in only bathroom renovations.

So what do you do when looking for a contractor to remodel your bathroom?

We recommend:

o Asking your friends and neighbors to see if they have had good or bad experiences with local contractors. Simply knowing that another person has had a good experience with a contractor prior to calling them lessens your chance of hiring a problem.

o Call 3 or 4 companies to bid on your remodeling project. This will help you determine fair market price for your job. This does not mean you should always go with the lowest price. You should go with the company you feel most comfortable with and who you feel will do the best job. If an individual is offering a real low price you should ask yourself, “why?”.

o Decide exactly what you want to do to remodel your bathroom. At a minimum you should have a few general ideas before calling a contractor. They can help you make some final decisions, but you need to be able to explain your basic needs before letting them talk you into things.

o Try to decide if your work can be accomplished by a handyman, or if it is more involved. If you are simply laying some tile, painting, and changing some fixtures you should feel confident that a quality handyman could handle this work. If you are talking about tearing things up and changing the entire bathroom around, then your best chance of success is by hiring an experienced general contractor.

o Make sure the company has insurance. There is a chance for injury and for destruction of your house when remodeling a bathroom. As mentioned above there are many fly-by-night contractors that may not be insured. Ask them for their insurance company’s phone number and call them to prove they are insured. If you skip this part you could be held liable for …

Is Your Bathroom Killing Your Romance?

Being a romance expert, I get this question a lot:

How do I make a good first impression on a date?

Or, for men that aren’t usually very romantic, what’s something important they can do to create romance?

The number one thing they should be thinking about, before the candles, before the dinner reservations and before the romantic music is cleanliness. Yes, I said cleanliness. Good personal hygiene and a clean house and car will ensure a good first impression. Not a believer yet, read on.

If you’re picking her up in your vehicle and she has to kick the trash out of her way to put her feet on the floor, this is not a good thing. Is the arm rest grimy and the passenger seat dirty from your buddies greasy clothes? This is not a good thing. Here is what she is thinking, “I can’t believe I’m sitting in this filthy car. I can’t touch anything and I better not get crap on my clothes. I took all this time deciding what to wear and fixing my hear just right and he didn’t even take five minutes to clean me a spot to sit on.”

Have your car detailed or clean it yourself, inside and out. If it smells odd get an air freshener, preferably a Lavender scented one which is perceived as an aphrodisiac by both men and women.

While in your home, if she uses your bathroom and it isn’t clean, depending on how bad it is, you probably won’t get a second date. She is probably thinking, “He didn’t care enough to make sure I had a clean restroom, I don’t think he’s worth anymore time. Besides, I’d just end up being his mother if we kept dating.” And if it’s not a date breaker, I’m sure she’s thinking about that slimy hair or the disgusting toilet she just sat on and not about the candle you lit or the wine you poured. She is now distracted and it’s very hard to pull her back to the romantic date.

Clean every room you think she might see. Don’t leave laundry lying around, clean up any dirty dishes and run the vacuum cleaner. They make these great cleaning wipes now that you just pull one out wipe up and throw it away. It don’t get any easier than that.

Personal hygiene is just as important. She won’t want to kiss a rotten mouth. The dentist is a great investment when it comes to romance. If you have problems with bad breath, tell your dentist they do have ways of fixing it. The “just showered and clean clothes” look are in.

If you follow these easy tips, you’ll have already started the romance. Now, chill that bottle of wine, light those candles and turn on some fun music that makes you happy. One more tip, don’t use elevator music or you’ll both be falling asleep.
