Yossi Benayoun agrees to four-year contract with Chelsea
Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun has been signed by Chelsea Football Club to replace Joe Cole.
Benayoun signed a four year contract after Chelsea and his former club, Liverpool, agreed to a £7 million fee (US$10.3 million). The Dimona-born footballer will have a higher salary with Chelsea, making approximately £80,000 (US$118,000) per week.
Both Chelsea and Liverpool fans were more than shocked to hear about the move. Chelsea fans couldn’t picture their club without Joe Cole and Liverpool fans were incredulous that Benayoun would abandon them for a London club.
Benayoun was first identified as a football star at the age of 9 and by the time he was 15 he was already scouted by Ajax Amsterdam. Ajax invited him to the Netherlands to play for the famed Ajax youth team. He would later play in Israel for Ha’poel Be’er Sheva and Maccabi Haifa before moving to England where he started with West Ham United before being transferred to Liverpool and finally to Chelsea. He also serves as the captain of the Israeli National Team.
