Spring is (Kind of) in the Air

Israelis noted the minor holiday of TuBiShvat today in a number of interesting ways. For years, thousands of people would turn out to plant trees on this quasi Arbor Day, helping Israel end the 20th Century as the only country with a net gain in trees. This year, however, that might not be such a good idea, as Ynet notes, since trees need a lot of water to grow–and Israel hasn’t gotten all the rain it needs. But Ynet suggests another option–working in the fields to help the hungry and homeless, thanks to an initiative by the Table to Table organization (bet you didn’t know Israel produces so much “excess” food).
