Our very own top 20 tennis star took a little time out of her US Open training schedule for the disadvantaged kids of NYC. Way to build bridges and reach out to future fans. Shahar, you’re a true star. Best of luck next week during the tournament, we’ll be the folks howling and hooting from the upper deck.

On Wednesday, 22 August 2007, at J.H.S 167 in the Upper East Side, 40 underserved children of the city of New York had the unique opportunity to have a free clinic with Shahar Pe’er, one of the world’s top tennis players, ranked 19 in the Women’s Tennis Association and a competitor in the US OPEN starting next week.
Pe’er was very enthusiastic with the initiative undertaken by the Consulate General of Israel in New York with the collaboration of the New York Sports Commission, and eagerly agreed to take time away from her intensive preparation for the US OPEN and give some training tips to these kids.
The Consul General of New York, Asaf Shariv, who was present at the training said: “We aim to enhance our relations with different communities in the United States such as the African American and the Hispanic ones and this initiative is yet another Consulate activity that will help us build strong and solid bridges with them”.
New York City Sports Commissioner Kenneth Podziba commented: “It is great to see Shahar Pe’er, one of the world’s top-ranked tennis players, take the time out of her busy training schedule to teach a free clinic to some of New York City’s underserved children. Perhaps some of the children here today and those attending similar free clinics throughout the year will one day follow in Shahar’s footsteps and compete against the best in the world at the US Open.”.
Mr. Gary L. Davis, President and CEO, of the New York Junior Tennis League said: “Shahar’s visit today sends a strong message to our city, and the worldwide tennis community that tennis is truly an international sport.”
At the end of the training session the kids received a gift bag with goodies from Israel and Reebok, Shahar’s official sponsor.

I’ve quoted you on my blog. Thanks for the video.
(I’m also curious as to whether someone is getting paid to do videos like the Bar/Gisele one. If so, how does one get a job like that. Sign me up!)

It’s good to see sahar helping out those without the big pocketbooks. I think more top ranked players should be helping on a grass roots level get more kids involved in the game. Tennis would help the obesity problem we have in America and stir up more interest in the sport.

Re Shahar Peer:
I listened to the Shahar Peer v. Maria Sharapova tennis match in the recent Fed Cup in Israel. Unfortunately my TV tube was on the fritz. I was appalled at the total lack of fairness and downright boorish behaviour of the Israeli fans. Have you no manners?
I was delighted that the two Russian girls responded to this outrageous behaviour on the part of Israeli citizens by thoroughly walloping your two players despite the fans attempts to sabotage the Russian players.
