39 Pounds of Love has received a double honor from Hollywood. On October 11, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences screened the film as part of its annual series saluting their choice of outstanding documentaries from the previous year. And on October 15, 39 Pounds of Love was presented with a Media Access Award.
The Academy, in association with the UCLA Film and Television Archive, has presented their series for 25 years. 39 Pounds showed at Hollywood’s Linwood Dunn Theater in a double-bill with Murderball on October 11. 39 Pounds director Dani Menkin and producer Daniel Chalfen were in attendance for a post-screening Q & A. “It is a huge honor to be celebrated in this way by the Academy,” said Chalfen. “And it is a great testament to Ami’s story and Menkin’s vision as a director.”
The Media Access Awards honors the entertainment and media industries with a gala Academy Awards-style evening celebrating Hollywood and the contributions made towards enhancing the lives of people with disabilities. The Media Access Awards recognizes those who use the unique power of their medium to increase public awareness and understanding. 39 Pounds won an award in the Documentary category. The Award was presented by the Media Access Office, established by the California Governor’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and the California Employment Development Department, along with Hollywood professionals and members of the disability community. This year’s ceremony was held on October 15 at The Globe Theater at Universal Studios.
