Parlez Vous Hebrew?
November 21, 2006 at 10:57 am | In Food & Drink |I believe it is quite safe to say that there is no other nation that takes absolute pride in her language and wines than the French. French is a sophisticated language, the language of diplomacy for centuries and yes, southern France, in particular, has some of the best wineries in the world. But over the last few decades, other countries, Israel being among them, are mastering the art of winery and doing a rather good job at it. Israeli wines have been welcomed in the US, in Canada, in European countries.
But lately, I have been very pleasantly surprised by the fact that more and more Israeli wines and finding their way into the fancy and elaborate wine lists of high end French restaurants…
With good reason, of course. Israeli wines have been steadily improving over the last couple of decades resulting in a steady increase of exports to several destinations. (For more information about wines in Israel, I would urge you to read the post “This ain’t your Momma’s Manischewitz” on this blog).
The best proof that an Israeli wine is very good is when a French wine chain store decides to market it. According to The Israel Export Institute , the French wine chain store “Repair de Bachos” specializing in marketing wine from around the world signed an agreement to market wines from Efrat Winery and Teperberg Boutique Winery in 50 chain stores throughout France. The wine to be marketed was selected by representatives from a variety of wines in various wineries. According to the agreement, the French chain will purchase approximately 40,000 bottles of wine from Efrat Wineries. The business deal will increase Efrat Wineries export by approximately 20% for the year 2006/7.
Efrat Winery was founded in 1870 by Zeev Zida Teperberg in the alleyway of the old city of Jerusalem, and actually was the first winery in the land of Israel in new era.
