Israeli develops iPhone app to alleviate NYC parking woes
The broken meter. The Holy Grail of parking. Finding this dream spot just got a whole lot easier for New York City drivers thanks to a new iPhone app. The application, called NYC Broken Meters, was developed by Raviv Turner, a native Israeli and former officer in the Armored Corps who has been living in New York City for the past eight years, and his partner Ilya Levin.
The idea all sprung from a program started by the City of New York called NYC BigApps, a competition designed to encourage new ways to disseminate existing information. Among the databases made available for contestants was one which collects traffic inspectors’ reports on broken meters. Of New York City’s 57,000 metered spots, a whopping 10 percent are thought to be offline at any given time. Simply download and fire up the free appand within seconds it uses your phones GPS to pinpoint available spots on its built-in google map interface.
If Guerillapps comes in fist place, Turner and Levin will have a dinner date with Mayor Mike Bloomberg to look forward to.
We thank the New York Post for this story.
