In voting timed to coincide with Israel’s 60th birthday, Israeli citizens named the hoopoe the national bird, according to Haaretz.
The designation is designed to call attention to the importance of environmentally-friendly practices and of maintaining bird-friendly skies. Because of Israel’s location at the junction of Asia and Africa, more than 500 million birds of many different species pass through the country on their twice-yearly migration.
For more information on the bird, here’s the Wikipedia entry on the subject.
