Since the dawn of their profession, surgeons have been bedeviled by the suturing process. A wound closed using traditional methods invites inflammation, scarring, and occasional infection. Now a team at Tel Aviv University headed by Professor Abraham Katzir has refined a novel approach using lasers to bond tissue layers. This is not a wholly new idea, but the team is the first to circumvent some of the key problems that had plagued earlier researchers. We’re still working out how exactly to understand what goes on, but we’re certainly excited by the prospects it offers. (Thanks to PhysOrg.com and Israel21c for the press release.)
The Investigation Continues: We were alerted to this article from the MIT Technology Review that sheds a bit more light (no pun intended) on this process.
