Shahar Peer pulled off a magnificent upset Wednesday morning in Dubai, defeating top ranked Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-5 to reach the quarterfinals of the Dubai Championship.
Peer’s victory carries some heavy political baggage. Last year, organizers of the Dubai event forbid her from participating due to her nationality as an Israeli. The WTA imposed a fine of $300,000 and security for Israel’s tennis star was especially tight.
