Israeli Scientists Follow Darwin’s Lead

With today marking the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth, we thought it would be fitting to note the impact his theory of evolution has had on research in Israel. Of course, the theory of evolution underlies much biology research today, but this is, after all, a blog exploring the latest in Israel.
While the basic theory of evolution seems pretty simple, more recent advances in various fields have left many questions unanswered, some of which the Institute of Evolution at the University of Haifa is working to answer. Several years ago, these studies contributed to the discovery of a gene that appears to help an organism withstand high salt levels–and could help revolutionize agriculture (Thanks to Israel21c for the tip!).
The bottom line: We’ve learned a lot from Darwin, and his theories continue to have a broad impact on science research in Israel.
