This following post will probably make a lot of turkeys upset. According to international statistics, Israel holds the world record of turkey consumption per person. In average year, an Israeli will consume around 10 k.g of turkey meat, around 22 pounds. The statistics collected by the Turkey Farmers of Canada relate to 2007 and are steady throughout previous years.

As opposed to the American way of roasting the bird, most Israelis will encounter their turkey while it’s slowly roasting on a spit at a Shawarma stand. Another favorite is the staple Schnitzel, that was introduced into Israeli culture, by Jews that immigrated from Europe. As opposed to the Vienna schnitzel which is usually out of veal or pork, the Israeli version is usually based on turkey or chicken breast breaded and fried.

Trailing 5 pounds behind Israel are the people of the United States, who consumed 17 pounds of turkey, per capita in 2007.  In the European Union average consumption was around 8 pounds, and in Russia the amount falls to only 1.5 pounds.

From all of us here at Isrealli.org, have a happy Thanksgiving!
