Many young Israelis love to travel. And I should know, I have met more than a few on my own journeys (mostly to India, Thailand and Nepal).

And while the sandy beaches, thumping music, exotic tastes and sights are attractive, soon enough, many a seasoned Israeli traveler will start to yearn for tastes of home.

Whether it’s the schnitzel that their mum makes, sour pickles or even the simple and ubiquitous un-sliced loaf of sourdough that is found in every neighborhood corner store (“makolet” in Hebrew)… they MISS it!! Sometimes, the spiritual urge to seek out Sabra-style food from home can send these travelers packing, and running for the first El Al flight home.

Not in New York.

In addition to the hummus places that import chickpeas from Israel, the newly-opened Aroma and Max Brenner chains, and the dearth of good Jewish (which often overlaps with “Israeli”) food available, there is one store bringing the taste of Israel straight to the people. It’s a place called the Holyland Market.

Among the punk outfitters, piercing parlors and general mayhem on St Mark’s place in the East Village, sits a market that brings the products of Israel to New York City. In addition to the imported cheeses, meats, spices and snacks, there are also CDs, DVDs and most importantly, cleaning products.

Otherwise, how would an Israeli clean a house with no sponga??

  2. Hi- I enjoyed learning about the Holyland Market in NYC. I’m a Jew that converted to Christianity about 17 years ago and I’ve had a great time meeting Israelis in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Japan. In my book, they’re ALRIGHT!
