Ayalon Park, on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, is an emerging marvel. Beginning in 1952, the site was the dumping ground for much of the city’s waste. In fact, enough garbage was dumped on the site to create 200-foot high Hiriya Mountain that covers 175 acres. Fortunately, that environmental disaster is not the end of the story. The garbage dump is being turned into Ayalon Park, where thousands of visitors will be able to come, free of charge, to enjoy the clean air and water and learn about recycling. While waste is still brought to the site, it is not dumped, but sorted and recycled. Great pictures of the site are also available on the TreeHugger blog. Watch out for more as the park continues to take shape.
