Centered inside of a new mall designed to open next year in Eilat is something you wouldn’t quite expect from the sun drenched southern Israeli city – an ice rink. With places like Dubai building indoor ski slopes, artificial islands in the shape of countries, and even underground skyscrapers (ok, that last one might not be real….yet), ironic building projects seem to be increasing in popularity.

It may seem silly at first, but they are taking the building of this ice rink very seriously. It will be Olympic-sized and up to regulations to host international competitions and events. With South America finally getting the Summer Games in 2016, maybe its time the Middle East host the Winter Olympics? Skiing in Dubai, Figure Skating in Israel, and Bobsledding in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings? For those curling fans out there, the ice rink will also be prepared if Israelis decide to replace soccer as their most popular sport.

As for the mall itself, which is just as big of an attraction for visitors to Eilat as the ice rink itself, it will cover 7,200 square meters (77,500 square feet) and include stores such as Zara, Swatch, Michal Negrin, Renuar and Marie Shoes.

The entire complex is set to open for next year’s Passover.
