Now that we’ve received some responses from potential “Faces of Israel,” we’ve begun to assemble our list of 60 Israelis to represent the full spectrum of Israeli society. Biographical details and pictures are available on the 60Israelis website.

Dr. J Visits Israel

Julius “Dr. J” Erving took some time on his tour of Israel to visit the Western Wall. He is visiting with basketball legends Rick Barry, Earl Monroe, and Dominique Wilkins on an NBA Goodwill tour sponsored by Migdal Ohr. Last night, in an unforgettable show, more than 1200 people gathered in Harlem’s world-famous Apollo Theater to wish the State of Israel a happy 60th birthday. Some of New York’s greatest gospel choirs gave moving performances and hip hop violinist Miri Ben-Ari got the audience jumping with her unique fusion of hip hop and classical styles. DeNiro Invests in Israel

According to Ynet, a new hotel in Herzliya has a high-profile investor. Actor Robert DeNiro and his son are partners in a new venture to build a high-class hotel and restaurant in the center of the town. This is one project we will be watching.

Al Gore Receives Israeli Prize

Al Gore brought his message against global warming to Israel this week, where he received the Dan David Prize for his activism in spreading environmental awareness. The Prize is awarded for contributions to the past, present, and future of humanity. Gore won in the “present” category for his “multiple contributions in raising the conscience of the world to the challenge posed to the continuing sustainable function of the global environment and life support system.”
In addition, Gore will participate in events throughout Israel that relate to his environmental work.

Mia Farrow and Nurit Galron on Mission to Africa

Israeli singer Nurit Galron left last week to join an aid mission in the Central African Republic. She will join actress Mia Farrow in visiting UNICEF headquarters, schools, and food centers, besides meeting with political leaders. The goal of Galron’s mission is to help Israelis become more aware of these global crises.

Celebrity Salute to Israel in Times Square

This month, Hollywood’s best and brightest will be saluting Israel in celebration of its 60th Anniversary, in a project initiated by the Consulate General of Israel in New York and Nancy Spielberg (sister of famous director, Steven). Their personalized video greetings, wishing Israel a “Happy Birthday!” are being broadcast on both the Nasdaq and Reuters electronic billboards in Times Square (43rd St. and Broadway).

The A-list celebrities include: Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Brooke Shields, Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin, Ashton Kutcher, Michael Douglas, Dakota Fanning, and many more. Not to mention, New York’s very own Donald Trump, who also joined the lineup.

The celebrity greetings will air throughout May, every hour at approximately 15 minutes and 45 minutes after the hour. Next time you’re in Times Square, look up!
