While we humans find food crops tasty, so do other animals like rodents. In the battle to control these pest populations, we’ve often resorted to pesticides; those chemicals, however, can do significant damage to the ecosystem as a whole. As an alternative, scientists and farmers are working together to promote natural methods of pest control. BBC News reports on one effort that utilizes owls and kestrels to keep rodents at bay. You can even see some pictures of the work on this webcam, featuring some of the owls at Kibbutz Tirat Zvi.

I also like how Jerusalem uses cats to keep down the rodent population in the city.

It would be great if everyone in the world put all there efforts into saving the world. If we could stop using pesticides and start using nature like predators, we could slowly start to save the planet. At the rate we are going though the planet is on a self destruct mode and will end soon.
