Less than a month since the devastating earthquake, it is important to remember that the job of saving Haiti has only just begun. For everyone who was fortunate enough to be pulled from rubble and for every child born in the apocalyptic landscape that is now Port-au-Prince,  their future is far from guaranteed.

While the media have done their best to shine a light on the tragedy, Haiti is quickly fading from the headlines. Now that the Israeli search-and-rescue delegation has left, rebuilding Haiti is a top priority. But rebuilding it as it was prior to the earthquake is not good enough. Haiti needs to be the country it always had the potential to be.

Despite their resilience and bravery, the Haitian people lack the resources to pull themselves out of the proverbial hole they now find themselves in. If, as the saying goes, the children are our future, education is of utmost importance.

Israel has a sent a delegation from Natanthe Israeli Coalition for International Humanitarian Aid, to set up a provisional school, a place of hope and structure in a country desperately needing both. For 800 students, yesterday was their first day of school.
